10 Ways Tablets Help Students + Giveaway

ASUS WeMO Pad 7 LTE main

We have used many types and sizes of tablets in our family.  Although none of my kids have their “own” tablet, tablets are freely available to use downstairs once homework is done.

I recently went to my daughter’s Back-to-School night at her new junior high school.  Her science teacher mentioned that tablets are allowed in the classroom.  In fact, students are encouraged to bring them to search for things online that accompany their studies in class.

Perhaps the time has come to allow my daughter to have her “own” tablet so she can use it in class for internet searching in science class and as a calculator in math (as permitted by her teacher).  I began to think of all the productive ways tablets help students.

But before I could entertain the thought of letting my daughter have her own tablet, I needed to ensure that whatever tablet she receives would be robust enough for school, yet not overly expensive in case of drops, theft, or loss.  I also wanted to ensure that the tablet was not heavy, as her backpack is already too heavy.

10 Ways Tablets Help Students

We have been using the ASUS MeMO Pad 7 LTE for the past month and I believe this is the best tablet for my daughter to take to school.  It’s the smallest tablet we’ve owned, with a screen size of just 7 inches, fits nicely in our hands, and is lightweight.  It’s also very affordable at $168 at Walmart.

Here are 10 ways  tablets help students, especially a junior high student…

1.  Internet Searching

ways tablets help students

My daughter can search Google inside her classroom and out to find research to help support her science projects, labs, research papers, concepts she needs help in for math, and more.  Using the tablet’s browser can also give her the latest news and weather updates.

2.  Watching Videos

ASUS WeMo Pad 7 (23)

My daughter is already an avid YouTube watcher.  She learns to do all sorts of things from braiding her hair, to making bracelets, to getting ideas for her projects, to learning from others how to handle a particular type of math.

The Asus MeMO Pad 7 LTE comes with a Intel® Atom™ Z3530 Quad-Core processor, so the videos process fast and are not choppy.  And unlike other tablets in a similar price range, the Asus MeMO Pad 7 LTE comes with dual stereo speakers on the front of the pad for a more immersive listening experience.

3.  Calculator

ASUS WeMo Pad 7 (10)

My daughter’s math teacher said using a calculator in class is OK, for the most part.  After all, he still uses one.  Rather than buying a separate calculator, my daughter can use the one on her tablet.  When it’s time to buy one of those expensive scientific calculators, we’ll just buy or find a free app so she doesn’t have to lug around a (expensive) calculator too.

4.  Reading eBooks

ASUS WeMo Pad 7 (13)

An avid reader, my daughter already has a Kindle Books Unlimited account and a Kindle Paperwhite to read them on.  The Paperwhite is a no-frills version offering black & white copy only.  Reading her Kindle books on a tablet not only gives her color pictures/book covers, but it affords her the ability to have two devices to read her books on…at school and at home.

5.  Practicing What Your Learning, Apps

ASUS WeMo Pad 7 (7)

There are a number of great educational apps out there for students to learn from.  IXL is our favorite website and now I see that it’s available in an app as well.  Now, my daughter can step away from her computer and relax a little more as she practices her math on the ASUS MeMO Pad 7 LTE.

With 16 GB of space and 1 GB of RAM, you can easily open a good number of apps at once time without issues.

6.  Taking Notes

ASUS WeMo Pad 7 (20)

The ASUS MeMO 7 Pad LTE has a great note-taking app called SuperNote.  Students can input notes through typing, taking pictures of writing on the whiteboard, or even handwrite in your notes.  They can make drawings, scribbles, underlines in any pen color as well as erase markings.

In addition, students can take video, add a text tile, record audio from the teacher, or insert pictures.  They can create a Notebook for each class as well as Notebooks for other things like poetry writings,  artistic drawings, a Christmas wish list, bucket list, etc.

7.  Calendar

ASUS WeMo Pad 7 (22)

In addition to the planners students have at school, using a digital calendar is great to get reminders about project deadlines, keep track of their extracurricular activities and events, and know how many days until Christmas vacation.  This is a good age for children to become more aware of birthdays of those in the family as well as their friends.  A digital calendar provides a bigger picture of their world.

8.  Emailing

ways tablets help students

Emailing friends, if not abused, is a great way to practice communication skills and get help or missed assignments from friends.  My daughter can easily email her teachers with any questions.

With the WeMo Pad’s Bluetooth 4.0 function, we can connect a Bluetooth keyboard to make typing easier.  The ability to type emails on the ASUS WeMO Pad 7 LTE is just another one of many ways tablets help students keep on top of their studies no matter where they are.

9.  Skype/Video Calls

ASUS WeMo Pad 7 (14)

I have not given my daughter a phone yet.  I am planning on giving her one when she is 13 or so.  The ASUS MeMO Pad 7 LTE includes an option for a pre-paid LTE plan which makes it easier to access the Internet without the need for WiFi.

The tablet will allow my daughter to Skype me from school (with its or WiFi) in case she needs me.  I also travel a bit and having an ability to call her on her tablet would be very handy.

She can also use Skype to do homework with friends, which is a lot easier than driving her to friends’ houses.  Doing homework face-to-face is inherent with all sorts of distractions.  With Skype, I can keep an eye/ear on how their studying is going.

10.  Storing Documents

ASUS WeMo Pad 7 (1)

Using an app like the Google Drive or Microsoft’s One Drive, my daughter can access the same files she uses from our computer at home.  So if she updates a document at school, at a friend’s house, or at home, using one of these cloud drives, she can always access the latest revision.

My daughter can also store pictures she takes from the tablet in her cloud storage drive.  The ASUS MeMO Pad 7 LTE camera includes a 5 MP rear camera with digital zoom and a 2 MP selfie camera with digital zoom.  The camera comes with a bunch of fun modes like Panorama, Selfie, Miniature, Time Rewind, GIF animation, and Smart Remove – to make pictures come alive with motion, color, and enhancements.

Sharing documents with other students is easy as well since the tablet comes with a micro SD Card reader, so students can share documents directly back and forth between phones/tablets using a micro SD card.

Responsibility

Giving my daughter a tablet to take to school…rather than a cellphone… will teach her responsibility for the tablet as well as use of the tablet and all of its alluring apps.  Next year, after she has proven herself responsible with the tablet, we will venture onto a cellphone and work on best texting and calling practices.

The ASUS MeMO Pad 7 LTE is an affordable Android tablet that will suit your student well…whether in elementary school, junior high, or high school.  As you can see, there are many ways tablets help students with their schooling.

  7. I would like to add that students can also view presentations and digital copies of articles while in class or outside of class. If students have their own devices, whether it be a smart phone, a tablet, or a chromebook, students no longer have to ask teachers for an extra copy or what was that assignment – it’s all available digitally.
