mom tech, mom technology, Zeo, personal sleep coach, moms, trouble sleepingby Lori Cunningham

This week is known as “National Sleep Awareness Week,” which is the last full week of slumber before we go into daylight savings time this Saturday night.  I’m sure many of you are dreading “springing ahead” and losing an hour of sleep.  I much prefer “falling back” and gaining an hour of sleep myself.

The 2002 National Sleep Foundation (NSF) Sleep in America poll found that 74 percent of American adults are experiencing a sleeping problem a few nights a week or more, 39% get less than seven hours of sleep each weeknight, and more than one in three (37%) are so sleepy during the day that it interferes with daily activities. 1

Are you getting enough hours of sleep each night?  Are you having trouble getting to sleep?  I tend to stay up late, then get up early to prepare my 1st grade daughter for school.  I’m tired when I wake up and practically fall asleep in the afternoon if I dare stop for a minute.  So I don’t.  I just keep  going.  At the end of the night I stop so I can watch our favorite reality shows with my husband  – only to fall asleep soon after in my chair – a tradition in my family.  Needless to say, we have a large backlog of shows in our DVR (but I’m all caught up on The Bachelor!)

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends that all adults get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night, regardless of age.  Hmmm.  that’s not my norm.  On average I get between 5 - 6 1/2 hours of sleep a day.  Okay, so I’m sleepy, but I still am  getting everything done, right?

Wrong.  I have been learning about the importance of sleep.   I learned that “sleep requires both the right mix and amount to be restorative.  Deep sleep and REM sleep are the foundation of restorative, healthful sleep.  Deep sleep naturally occurs more in the early parts of the night.  REM sleep naturally occurs more in the morning.  So if you’re going to bed too late, or getting up too early, you may be compromising sleep quality.” 2  Yikes!

Ahaa!  That explains my wrinkles!  I haven’t been sleeping enough.  Now I know why people say they need their beauty sleep.  It also explains why I always seem to have a cold longer  than anyone else in my household.  It is time to pay more attention to my sleep patterns.

Zeo Personal Sleep Coach

As many of you know, I have been testing out the Zeo Personal Sleep Coach, a gadget I fell in love with at The Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas a couple of months ago. You can check out my first night with the Zeo – Trouble Sleeping?  The Zeo Personal Sleep Coach Can Help.  I have been using the Zeo now for nearly one month.  It seemed fitting to give you my review of the Zeo during this all important Sleep Awareness Week. Zeo, personal sleep coach, trouble sleeping, mom tech, mom technology

Zeo describes itself as a” new kind of educational tool and motivational program that helps you understand how you are sleeping, reveals habits and behaviors that my be helping or hindering your sleep, and teaches new ways that my help you get a better night’s rest.”  Zeo’s tag line is, ”the more you know, the better you sleep.”

As we sleep, we go through three stages of sleep that are important  for our bodies and state of mind3:

  1. Light Sleep -  Light sleep accounts for about half of the night and bridges the gap between the other sleep phases
  2. REM – REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is a mentally active phase of sleep when our most vivid dreams occur.  This phase of sleep is essential for memory formation and storage, as well as for emotional processing.
  3. Deep Sleep – This sleep phase is important for physical and emotional restoration. During deep sleep, the body releases growth hormones for healing and growth, while the immune system strengthens and renews itself.

How the Zeo Works

When you open up the package you get the nice bedside clock, shown above, a black headband (shown on top of the clock above), and a SD card which plugs into the side of the clock.

Zeo, personal sleep coach, trouble sleeping, mom tech, mom technology

To begin is simple:

  1. set the clock to the correct time
  2. ensure the SD card is plugged into the clock
  3. charge the headband – the charging station is on top of the Zeo clock
  4. after the headband is charged, put it around your forehead using the adjustable bands
  5. sleep
  6. in the morning, put the headband in the charging station and look at your sleep stats
  7. take the SD card and put it into your computer to upload your stats to myzeo.com.  You don’t need to do this everyday, the SD card can hold up to 7 days data
  8. On myzeo.com you can evaluate  your sleep history and enter in data about what you did the evening before which may have affected your sleep
  9. put the SD card back into the clock and start the process again

Each morning you use the Zeo, you will receive your ZQ score – similar to an IQ.  Your ZQ is  derived from the total amount of sleep you had, the time spent in REM, light, and deep sleep.  Your score decreases dependent upon a lessor amount of sleep, how long you were awake and how many times you woke up during the night.

Here are my results from the first night of using Zeo compared to March 7th:

Date Total Hours Sleep Time Awake  Times Awoken Light Sleep REM Sleep Deep Sleep ZQ
 Feb. 16th 5 hr  23 min 17 6 3 hours 12 min 2 hr 3 min  33 min 59
 March 7th  6 hr 34 min    5  3  3 hours 23 min  2 hr 5 min  52 min 74

As you can see, I have dramatically cut down the time I am awake during the night.  I am also getting more deep slZeo, personal sleep coach, trouble sleeping, mom tech, mom technologyeep.  Of course, each night varies – there are still some nights where I don’t sleep like I should.eo, personal sleep coach, trouble sleeping, mom tech, mom technology

The left chart comes from myzeo.com after I uploaded my sleep data.  It depicts my sleep patterns on March 7th.  The red shows you awake time, the green is REM, the gray is light sleep, and the dark green is deep sleep.

The chart on the right also comes from myzeo.com and shows my trend over the past 7 nights.  There is a lot of good useful data you can track online if you’re vigilant about uploading your data.

What I learned using the Zeo Personal Sleep Coach:

o  I get just about all of my deep sleep in the first hour of sleep.  So now I do all I can to protect that hour.  I make sure that I go to bed one hour earlier than my husband so my sleep isn’t disrupted by snoring or his coming to sleep soon after and waking me up.

o  I am not getting enough deep sleep due to the fact that I’m not getting enough sleep at night.  I need to get closer to the 7-9 hours of sleep a night goal.

o  I am a very active REM sleeper – which means I dream a lot throughout the night.  I often remember my dreams in the morning, so I’m not surprised by this.  Compared to others my age though, I spend more time in REM then they do.

o  I used to have trouble falling asleep and waking up at night.  Since starting with Zeo, I have cut this time in half.  Zeo has a personal coach e-mail program for an extra fee, that sends you personalized reports of how to cut down awake time.   The e-mail’s made me aware of how exercise and drinking alcohol close to bed can mess up your sleep patterns.  They also sent me a mp3 of ways to relax before bedtime.  I no longer look at the clock throughout the night when I’m awake.  I used to do that a lot and it would stress me out since I could see that I was missing sleep.

Hey, I’ve still got a long ways to go.  My sleep score average is 71.  The ZQ average for my age is 74 — and I can be an over achiever at times – so I need to get cracking!  But I started at a 69 average, so I’m getting better.

A Mom’s Perspective

It is my hope that you will treat your sleep with higher priority and find ways to obtain better sleep.  Since I have been using the Zeo to focus on my sleep more, I have more patience with my kids and feel more balanced.  I highly recommend the Zeo Personal Sleep Coach if you’re struggling with sleep or could use help in obtaining more restorative sleep.

The headband is very comfortable and I just love waking up every morning and checking my sleep stats.  One more important thing to add is that the Zeo can be used as a normal alarm clock or you can enable the “smart wake” feature which wakes you up within a certain designated time frame.  It will wake you within this time frame when you are in light sleep – as opposed to REM.  Waking up in light sleep will be easier for you and your body can adjust.  It plays a nice jingle that gradually gets louder.

Take advantage of National Sleep Awareness Week and begin assessing your sleep now.  For more ideas on how to get a good night’s sleep, visit the Zeo Sleep Center.  The Zeo Personal Sleep Coach retails for $279 and can be purchased online at myzeo.com.

If anyone decides to get one, please let me know.  We can compare our stats and help each other.  And to all I wish you a good night’s sleep!

by Lori Cunningham

BestBuyMobile.com generously allowed me to borrow the new Motorola CLIQ phone to use during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) I attended in January.  The CLIQ is based on the 1.5 Android platform with a slick 3.1″ HGVA display.  It has a 5 mega pixel camera with 4x digital zoom.

The Motorola CLIQ (available through T-Mobile) is the first device on the mobile phone market to launch with MOTOBLUR, a unique “life streaming” software Motorola created for the Android platform.  MOTOBLUR is pretty cool because after you input your e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc. passwords into your online MOTOBLUR account, you start receiving messages from your various accounts right on the home screen of your phone.  You can also arrange to receive some of your favorite news sources on the home screen.  Walking around the trade show floor, I found this feature extremely helpful as I tweeted and texted with friends while we were trying to find each other during the CES show.  I also enjoyed the texting feature which shows your texts with each person as a chat stream so you can easily go to the beginning of the the text “chat” session to recount certain details.  These chat sessions stay with the phone number so you’ll have a collection of all texts you had with each person.

Pictures

The CLIQ offers a 5 mega pixel camera and digital camcorder to help you capture those “got to have” moments when you don’t time to run and get your camera.  The camera picture quality is decent in good lighting.  There is no flash so the pictures you take at night are of poor quality.  One feature I liked was that with every picture you snap, your camera stores two pictures – a good quality one for printing and one small sized one for texting.   Below is a shot I took showing the quality of both sizes your camera provides:

Google

Because the Motorola CLIQ is an Adroid phone and GPS enabled, it features Google Maps which helps locate where you are and where you are going.  There is no extra cost for GPS Navigation from T-Mobile.  If you need navigation directions, TeleNav is a program in the CLIQ which offers a 14 day trial.  The ongoing cost for TeleNav is $9.99/month through T-mobile.  Having the GPS and navigation on your phone is particularly great if you’re in another city or state and you’re trying to find your hotel, restaurant, or someone’s house.  It’s convenient — you already have your phone and you don’t need to cart around your portable GPS system too.

Phone Locator

This is a great feature!  OK, how many of you are like me and have lost a couple of phones before – say at a restaurant?  the gym?  on vacation?  who knows where?  I was never able to recover mine and found that at least in one instance, someone was using my account to  make calls.  I called Disneyland to ask them how many phones are lost a day.  They said during the busiest times of year, they recover around 30-50 phones daily!  So, if you’ve lost your phone, you’re not alone!  If you lose your phone, just log into your account at www.motorola.com/mymotoblur and click the “Locate Device” button.  Your phone location will be shown in Google Maps.  Pretty cool, huh?  One big caveat though, Locate Device is accurate within 8,000 feet, so it’s not completely precise, but it will give you a general area where your phone is and likely trigger your mind where you left it (if no one stole it first).

Here are my top pro’s and con’s for the Motorola CLIQ:

 Pro’s

  • Google Maps are included
  • Well-sized slide out keyboard
  • Nice 3.1″ display with touch screen
  • MOTOBLUR capability to see your Twitter, Facebook, and web e-mail combined on the home screen
  • Story lining texting – texts to and from you appear in an easy to see stream so you can easily follow the conversation thread and who said what
  • Web widgets available to customize your home screen such as weather, picture display, calendar, etc.
  • Locate Device helps you find your phone if it’s missing
  • Takes decent pictures

 Con’s:

  • The Android platform tends to run slow at times
  • Most of my appointments on my Outlook calendar did not transfer over (a major problem for me)
  • The touch screen didn’t always work well, sometimes I had to use a finger on the other hand to get the screen to respond
  • The battery drains incredibly fast – due to the constant updating from Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc.  Motorola recommends you turn off Bluetooth, GPS, and WiFi when not in use to diminish rapid battery use.  Motorola released a software update to their software that promises to increase the battery life.  I installed the software and it helped the battery last almost through the day.  Previously, it barely made it halfway through the day.
  • Pictures turn out poor in low lighting due to no flash

A Mom’s Perspective

I would rate the Motorola CLIQ a 8 out of 10 rating.  If you are a Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, or text messaging fanatic, this is a great phone to have to help you converge and keep track of messages coming from different sources.  The MOTOBLUR function is pretty impressive and extremely useful.  I hope to see MOTOBLUR on further Motorola phones.  The slide out keyboard is a good size and quite easy to type text messages on.  The major drawback is the CLIQ’s synchronization with Outlook – it did not show any of the 15+ appointments I needed to attend during CES.  I’ve been told that if I synchronize my Outlook data with Google online, all my appointments would show up.  However, I did not want to upload my private Outlook calendar data onto Google’s servers at this time.

If you already own a Motorola CLIQ, please leave your comments about what you like or dislike about the phone.  Not a CLIQ user?  Tell us why you prefer your phone.  Well, gotta go, my phone’s ringing!

Zeo Personal Sleep Coach

My Zeo Personal Sleep Coach arrived in the mail the other day!  You may recall I highlighted the Zeo as one of my favorite Mom tech products  from the  2010 CES Show.  I talked with the Chief Technology Officer and Co-founder of Zeo at CES.  I was mesmerized by all the features and capabilities of Zeo.  Zeo sent me the unit to review.

I am the first to admit I don’t get enough sleep – but then again, what mom does?  I know I could use some help in getting more and better quality sleep.  But even more than that, I was just downright curious about what type of sleep I am getting.  I feel that I:

  1. take forever to fall asleep
  2. don’t get enough sleep
  3. wake up a lot during the night
  4. wake up early on my own but don’t feel refreshed

So, I will be using the Zeo to monitor my sleep for the next month to see if all the features and promises of the product hold true.

But first, just to give you a little insight about me, I stayed up late last night waiting for the sleep band to charge.  I placed the comfortable band on my forehead and tried to get to sleep.  I had difficulty getting to sleep because I couldn’t wait to see what my results were going to be in the morning!

Here were my results:

  • I slept  for 5 hours and 23 minutes
  • it took me 17 minutes to fall asleep (it seemed more like an hour!)
  • I woke up 6 times during the night (it felt like I was up all night)
  • I spent 40% of my time in light sleep
  • I spent 40% of my time in REM sleep (no wonder why I didn’t feel refreshed – my mind was racing most the night!)
  • 20% of my time was spent in deep sleep

Wow!  I was amazed at the type of information I received.  To me it seemed like I was up all night and it took forever to get too sleep.  But my Zeo proved me otherwise.

There are more  great features I’m looking forward to telling you about, but I need to use it more and explore them further first.  Look for my post in March during the  National Sleep Awareness Week®, which takes place March 7-13, 2010.

Think I’ll take a nap now.

Did you know that today is the official “Clean Out Your Computer Day?” Every 2nd Monday of February has been designated as such by the Institute for Business Technology.  What a brilliant idea.

I’ll be the first to admit that I am a pro at quickly getting a smooth, fast running computer to run slow.  I tend to download different programs to try out – some trials, some full versions.  My desktop tends to collect a zoo of shortcut links – so many that they are no longer “shortcuts” since I need to wade through a ton of shortcuts to find the shortcut I’m looking for!

What are Some of the Main Reasons Your Computer May be Running Slow?

  • Extra programs/services could be loading when you boot up your computer that you don’t need.
  • The Windows registry, which stores settings and options for the Windows operating system gets overloaded with unnecessary references which can cause your computer to crash or freeze.
  • Security threats can cause issues with your computer.
  • Temporary and history files divert your computer’s processing power and should be discarded frequently.
  • Hard drives and RAM (system memory) get fragmented which make it harder for your computer to open files and start programs.

I have tried various “free trials” for computer clean-up programs.  They seem to work great and give me an entire laundry list of all the problems I have.  Then they fix only five and say that’s all the trial can do for me.  What a disappointment.  So I obtained a copy of System Mechanic from the folks at Iolo.com to review their product and report back to you if it helped my computer.

To no surprise, I received a system status of “poor.”  I knew this was the case because my computer runs sluggish and takes a long time to boot up.

What I didn’t realize was how bad off my poor computer was.  I had over 412 registry problems, 15 vulnerable security issues, and 1 GB of system clutter!  Yikes!

System Mechanic 9.5, pc tune-up, wellconnectedmom.com mom tech

To further enhance my computer’s effectiveness, I found that I could turn off  programs and services I didn’t use much:

System Mechanic 9.5, pc tune-up, wellconnectedmom.com mom tech

I have to admit, I love diagnostic tools like this – and System Mechanic 9.5 is full of over 40 useful tools that you can use automatically or as needed:

System Mechanic 9.5, pc tune-up, wellconnectedmom.com mom tech

OK, you’re probably wondering how did my computer fare through all of these tests and pokes?  Here are my final results after running the complete diagnostics twice, the same day I loaded the program:

System Mechanic 9.5, pc tune-up, wellconnectedmomm.com, mom tech

As you can see, I was able to recover nearly 1 GB of hard drive space and 222 MB of RAM, fix over 400 registry problems, repair 15 security vulnerabilities, and take care of 7 start up problems.  Phew!  That’s a lot of fixes!

System Mechanic 9.5 is the number one selling PC tune-up software on the market.  They have repaired over 70 million computers since 1998.  System Mechanic retails for $49.95 but is currently offered for $24.95 at Iolo’s website for a one-year licence.  System Mechanic call also be purchased at Costco, Sam’s, Target, Best Buy, Office Max, Office Depot, etc.

A Mom’s Perspective

I shudder to think where I was headed with my computer had I not been able to fix a lot of these issues now.  I was already starting to have some strange problems with my computer before I tried System Mechanic 9.5.  My hope is that those issues are far behind me.  As with kids, if you don’t nip things in the bud right away, you’ll have larger problems later.  Take the time today or this week to clean up your computer.  Keeping your computer in check will help increase the longevity of your computer.

Well, after loading the System Mechanic software, retreiving all the drive and memory space, and fixing registry, security, and start-up issues in under 15 minutes, I feel as if I have saved several hours of work.  Time for a long lunch!
