An Electric Scooter that Grows with Your Teen

When my kids were 8 and 11, we bought them fun electric scooters.  They had a blast riding them on the street.  But in no time at all, the scooters were a bit small for them.  The handlebars weren’t designed to stretch and grow with their riders.

Now my kids are teenagers and although those scooters were fun, they just aren’t tall enough or fast enough.

While at CES, I looked at the Razor scooters and found one that can definitely “grow” with my kids.  It’s called the Razor E Prime Electric Scooter and it’s a perfect scooter for teens and urban city commuters.

Weighing in at 21 lbs., the Razor E Prime Electric Scooter houses an adjustable handlebar to accommodate various heights, so as my 5ft. 3 son grows to 6 ft, he can still ride it.  It even has a longer and wider riding board to accommodate larger-sized feet.

With its dual braking system – one on the handlebar and one over the rear wheel, you can stop slowly and with ease. There is also an acceleration system to speed things up!

My teens love that the Razor E Prime Electric Scooter can go up to 15 mph and handle turns well.

It also handles jumps from curbs well with its sturdy aluminum frame.  Although it’s designed for flat surfaces, we tested it out on some 30% incline hills and it did just fine, though it didn’t churn out 15 mph.

In fact, the Razor E Prime Electric Scooter handles very well, providing a smooth ride.  I love that the 8″ wheels are airless – this means you never need to worry about a flat tire.

On the other hand, without air in the tires and a suspension system, you can feel the cracks in sidewalks and potholes in the streets pretty strongly.  They are doable, just not desirable.

It’s easy to see how much power you have.  When the blue lights go out and you’re down to only yellow and red, it’s time to start looking for a plug.

Scooter Uses

Of course, my kids and I like to ride the scooter on our street.  But there are a lot of ways you can use an electric scooter…

  • ride it to a friend’s house in the neighborhood
  • ride it along the beach, lake, or river
  • great for vacations, keeps the kids entertained during down times
  • ride it to the clubhouse (if you live in apartments)
  • scoot it to the mailbox if it’s not in front of your house
  • take the dog for a walk/run!
  • ride it to a nearby restaurant or store (at home or on vacation)
  • go on scooter rides with the fam
  • take it to the local park
  • great for city tours when traveling
  • put a heavy load on it to transfer the load somewhere else
  • keep it in the back of the car for spur of the moment rides
  • take it with you in the RV, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to ride one!
  • great for timeshares to zip around to all the activities
  • perfect for the college campus – makes getting from one class to another more fun!
  • live in the city? Commute via scooter to get to work faster – and no need to look for parking!
  • ride it in the cemetery…yes, we tried it! Virtually no traffic!

A Scooter that Grows With Your Teen

Razor E Prime Electric Scooter

I love many things about the  Razor E Prime Electric Scooter, but one of the things I love the most is that this fun teenager “toy” can be used at college and eventually for urban commuting.

This scooter grows with your kids and can have multiple uses.  It cuts down on emissions and gives your teenager commuting options without the need to park a car or find a bike rack.

With its fold-up, anti-rattle design, it can be taken on a train, on a bus, or put in the back of the car.  It gives teens and adults options that a bike or car cannot.

Scooters are popular these days.  Undoubtedly, you’ve heard the news about companies like Lime and Bird who offer rental scooters in urban cities.  Rentals are skyrocketing because scooters are a convenient and fun way to zip around a city.

Having your own  Razor E Prime Electric Scooter gives your growing kids (or you) the option to start scootering right where you are without having to find a Lime or Bird rental rack.

  • Its 8″ airless wheels mean no flat tires

  • Meant for ages 14+ with max rider weight at 176 lbs.  The more weight, the less range it has

Pros:

  • The battery lasts pretty long, about 35-40 minutes which is a good amount of time for my son’s rides
  • A fun ride with little noise, very enjoyable
  • Great for urban commuters and teens
  • The battery indicator is helpful, just glance down while riding to see how much power you have left
  • A sturdy and comfortable ride
  • The option to break with the hand brake or foot brake over the rear wheel gives you flexibility
  • Can get up to the full speed, 15 mph, rather quickly, provides for a stable ride and handles turns well
  • Folds up nicely and can be tucked under the seat on a train or bus
  • Its smaller footprint makes it a better choice than a bike for carrying and storage
  •  At 15 mph, it’s fast enough for bike lane street traffic yet safer for teens
  • It’s eco-friendly with no emissions, just charge it with electricity (available everywhere)
  • Very easy to dismount by stepping off – helpful if unsure at a fast speed of how to stop quickly
  • Little effort required other than some balance and you won’t get sweaty by the end of the ride (helpful for commuting)

Cons:

  •  The charging port has a pull tab that is very hard to pull off.  I leave it open, but it is probably meant to keep water out of the charging mechanism
  •  When going over bumps or divisions in sidewalks, you feel it as there is no suspension

The Razor E Prime Electric Scooter sells for $382.90 with free shipping from eBay.

A Mom’s Perspective

I have to admit, I love riding this scooter.  There’s no bending over as the handlebars are nicely within reach.  It provides a smooth ride on streets and 15 mph is enough speed to seem like you’re going fast without making you too nervous that you’re going too fast to jump off.

This makes me more comfortable in allowing my 13-year-old son to ride the scooter.  We just came back from Vegas from a 4-day volleyball tournament for my daughter.  My son looked forward to the time he could zip around on the scooter.

In fact, he zipped down the long hallways of our hotel and cruised the parking lot.  Not wanting to miss out on the fun, my husband got on it too to drive it to the front desk.

We were staying with the volleyball team at a timeshare, there were lots of parking lots.  He loved it.  Even though my husband is over 176 lbs., he did fine on the scooter.

I enjoy riding it too but I have to sneak out and ride it.  If my son sees me taking it outside to ride, he grabs his helmet and jumps on it before I have a chance!

He loves riding it up and down our long street.  For me, there’s no doubt.  It will be one of the first things packed on any road trips or RV trips we take.
