Can You Really Wash Your Computer’s Keyboard?

by Lori Cunningham (@wellconnectdmom)

I receive e-mail’s all the time requesting our WellConnectedMom team to evaluate a company’s tech products, gadgets, and gizmos.  So when a request came in for a PC keyboard, I barely looked at it…until I saw the word, “washable.”

Washable?  Were they for real?  Soon after my response, I received a package in the mail from Logitech, complete with their Logitech Washable Keyboard K310 and a washcloth.  How cute.  (See, you can tell I really am a techie if I thought that was cute!)

The keyboard looks quite different with its elevated white keys on a black board.

Notice the back of the keyboard, there are drip holes and even an included brush to brush off crumbs or brush beneath the keys during its wash.

Spills, A Worry of the Past?

I don’t know about you, but I’d have to say I’m a clutz.  I have probably spilled drinks on my keyboard at least 15 times in my life.  Spills included tea, coffee, water…and milk!  Yes, milk, I’m an avid milk drinker, but let me tell you, milk is the LAST thing you want to pour on your keyboard.  The smell after it dries can be horrible.  I have spilled milk on my keyboard twice.  The second time it happened, I learned from the first and splashed water over it to help get the milk out…just hoping I wouldn’t destroy the keyboard in its entirety.  I didn’t destroy it, but keys did stick.

I have a PC in my kitchen, that my kids use frequently.  I know it’s only a matter of time before they spill their drink on the keyboard.  This kitchen PC  is the perfect test for the new washable Logitech keyboard.  Although the kids have not yet spilled a drink on it, it’s only a matter of time.  Ugh!

I video taped my experience of washing the keyboard for the first time.  I’ll tell you, it’s a little scary, it just goes so against what we all know about putting water on PC keyboards.  At the same time, it’s kind of liberating too!

After washing the keyboard, I plugged it right in, as there is an included cap to put on the USB plug to help keep water out.  The keyboard worked immediately.  Later, I read the instructions that you are supposed to air dry the keyboard first.  Oops. They washable keyboard also has special shortcuts attached to the function keys to help you do things faster.  For example,

  • F1 – takes you to your home screen
  • F2 – opens your mail
  • F3 – allows you to search your computer
  • F4 – opens a calculator
  • F5 – opens your music player
  • F6 – allows you to rewind your music or video
  • F7 – plays or stops your music or video
  • F8 – fast forwards your music or video
  • F9 – mutes your PC’s sound
  • F10 – turns down your sound
  • F11 – turns up your sound
  • F12 – turns off or on your PC
The shortcuts work great to make it easier for your kids to find things easier at the computer or for you to control your music faster.
The Logitech K310 retails for $39.99 through Logitech or Amazon (with Amazon free super shipping).

A Mother’s Perspective

A washable keyboard comes in handy if:
1.) you are a clutz like me
2.) you have kids
My kids know better about keeping their hands clean before using our technology, yet I am always finding smudges and crumbs on our keyboards and iPad.  The Logitech Washable Keyboard K310 is more durable then our other keyboards and now even the kids can enjoy helping to clean the keyboard after they make messes or spill on things on it.
Worried the kids will submerge the keyboard in water?  No problem, the keyboard is even submersible up to 11 inches!  And they can even use dish soap to  clean it!   Nice.

*  I was sent a Logitech Washable keyboard K310 to see for myself how the keyboard can be submerged in water, dried off, and used successfully with the PC.
