Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Super Heroes

Who doesn’t like Disney?  When Disney first came out with their Disney Infinity Starter Pack and many of their loveable characters to go with the  game, Disney fans went crazy.  Kids loved the idea of playing with a bunch of their favorite Disney characters in make-up scenarios in their family room, then turn around and export them through the Disney Infinity Base to their TV’s.  Kids got to play with their favorite characters in new ways and journey on new adventures.

Disney Infinity recently released their latest version 2.0 for all gaming consoles, PC’s and even tablets.  This year they came out with two main starter packs found in stores:

1.  The Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Starter Pack includes Thor, Iron Man, and Black Widow, 2 Toy Box game discs, as well as the Disney Infinity Base.  The two  game discs allow you to take the video game adventure into the Toy Box with “Escape from the Kyln” and “Assault on Asgard.”

2.  The Disney Infinity 2.0 Toy Box Starter Pack comes with Merida, Stitch, 2 Toy Box game discs, and the Disney Infinity Base. From my understanding the Disney Toy Box Starter Pack with Merida and Stitch does not have a full blown game, as with the Disney Marvel characters, but instead a few games you can play within Toy Box, using the two included game discs.  With the Stitch’s Tropical Rescue game disc you help Stitch and Pleakey save little ducks from Galactic Federation robots and with the Brave Forest Siege game disc, you help Merida find her mischievous brothers while dodging wooden carvings placed by the evil witch.

Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Starter Pack

We are reviewing the Disney Marvel Starter Pack because the Disney Infinity 2.0 game includes a whole section dedicated to the Marvel team and it is a big part of the new Infinity 2.0 video game.  The Disney Infinity 2.0 video game is the same in both starter packs, so you could buy the Toy Box Starter Pack and later on buy the Marvel characters to play.  This is an important point because Disney does not do a good job of explaining this well on their website.

In addition to Thor, Iron Man, and Black Widow, there are more than 20 Marvel characters available to purchase for the Marvel adventures in the Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel game.  Additional characters include Captain America, Hulk, Hawkeye, Spider-Man, Star Lord, Falcon, Loki, Gamora, Venom, Iron Fist, Drax, and more.  Each character possesses special unique skills and magical powers.  There is a little learning curve in learning how to maximize each characters skills.

As you progress through the game, each character has a skill tree which you can build up for your character as you unlock new abilities.  These new abilities can be used for speed, special types of healing, attacks,  or melee (a disorganized but powerful close combat attack).

The Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Super Heroes game begins with finding out the Loki has released Frost Giants from Asgard in the Avengers Tower.  The Avengers are frozen solid and havoc was released throughout the building.  The Avengers Tower is located in NYC, complete with pedestrians, taxi cabs, cars, and more and adventures continue once you leave the Tower.

My son’s favorite pastime in the game was flying through the air with Thor and smashing parked and driving cars on the streets of Manhattan.  I enjoyed riding the motorcycle around town, but found that I left a slew of smashed cars behind me.  Guess I shouldn’t drive a motorcycle in real life.  Fortunately, the pedestrians I ran over continue to live and walk on after being disarrayed.

You have different challenges you’re given, guided by small video snippets of instruction or written comments to let you know what you need to focus on.  A compass provides guidance as to where you are versus certain objects/goals are.  There is also an ascending or descending number which tells you how close…or faraway you are from where you are supposed to be.  Furthermore, you will see a number 1 or 2 in a circle which gives you an indication as to which direction your partner is.

These numbers are incredibly helpful guideposts to ensure you proceed in the game and don’t get lost.  My nine-year old was able to grasp these concepts well and he has had fun playing the game. Once or twice he got frustrated in some of the tunnels were were in (inside the Tower) and he handed the controller to me to have him catch up.  Let me tell you, this rarely happens, as he prides himself on being the one leading the pack.

Toy Box

Although the adventure games are fun, the Toy Box takes the crown for what Disney Infinity is all about.  Think of it as a “Minecraft” type of environment where kids can build lands with flowers, animals, bad guys, castles, treehouses, city streets, traps, etc.  And with the inclusion of Disney Infinity game discs, you can easily make dream lands straight  from your favorite Disney movies…or play built-in games, specifically for Toy Box.

The Toy Box 2.0 version is much more user friendly, offering kids a world of possibility.  Kids can even submit their worlds…and even games…they created online to Disney and make them available for other kids to enjoy.  In fact, there is a whole world of kid and adult created levels kids can download to add to their consoles for free.  In fact, Disney even hired 5 Infinity fans to create new levels for the game sets to be available for free every week.

Fortunately, your original Disney Infinity characters and power discs can be used in the Disney Infinity 2.0 Toy Box.

Pros:

• Disney Infinity original characters and power discs will work in the new Toy Box
• Marvel Avenger fans will love this game, giving them a chance to interact with their favorite heroes
• Playing in the New York City streets and smashing cars around is a lot of fun
• Each character possesses and can achieve more unique talents – building these talents is strategic
• Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Super Heroes gives new stories and adventures that older children can appreciate
• The Toy Box mode is not found on any other type of video game and is a Disney lover’s dream to create and play in their own Disney world
• You can play on your PC or Apple tablets/phones for free

Cons:

• You cannot play on Android devices at this time
• The Starter kits are a little pricey
• There is only one game slot available, which means once you start the Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel adventure, you can’t start the story all over again new and save your progress
• Disney Infinity 2.0 compatibility – 2,0 characters and game discs will not work with the original Disney Infinity
• After you put a character in the Infinity base, there is a bit of a load time.  I noticed this with certain segments of the game as well

The Disney Infinity 2.0 Starter Packs retail for $74.99 in most places, but are available at a great discount at Walmart for a limited time.  You can actually get the Xbox 360 Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Super Heroes Starter Pack for Black Friday pricing right now, for $39.99.  The other consoles Disney Infinity 2.0 games are on sale for $59.96.

Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Super Heroes Starter Pack and Disney Infinity 2.0 Toy Box Starter Pack are available on the following consoles: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Wii U. You can also download it for free on your iPad, iPhone (available soon), Windows 8 devices and PC.

If you’re a gamer, you’re going to love the creativity of Toy Box.  And even if you’re not, take some time to play in the Toy Box with your kids to help them get started on all the wonderful Disney possibilities that await them.  There are a lot of new tools which help you to randomly generate lands, cities, and more.

If you haven’t purchased any Disney Infinity games/starter sets yet and you have younger children, I would recommend buying the original Disney Infinity Starter Pack first, as it has three younger kid oriented games including the Incredibles, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Monsters, Inc.
