Welcome to my world — one mom, one dad, two boys, one iPad, two Kindles, two iPods, and two iPhones. Plus a whole bunch of computers, but that’s another story for another time. Like most families, we are always on the go. And whether we are taking a long road trip to visit family and friends, or whether we’re out and about around town, I must admit that many of our devices go along for the ride. And, for obvious reasons, it’s important that our devices are protected no matter where we are.
So, when I learned of the opportunity to try out the new PixCase by Jaymo, of course, I jumped at the chance. We recently purchased our first iPad 2. We had never owned an iPad before and needless to say, with three other “technologically addicted’ humans in my house, I’m often fighting for my turn to use it.
When my husband and I made our list for what we wanted in an iPad case, we had very few requirements:
- It had to be sturdy but not too bulky and solid but not too heavy.
- It had to protect the iPad from damage in the event that (gasp!) one of us accidentally dropped it.
- And it had to be fun. By fun, I mean that it had to have a personality. It had to be a case that wasn’t just another plain, black, boring case. We have a whole closet full of those!
PixCase – What is it?
Enter the PixCase for iPad 2. This case met all of our needs and then some. It is lightweight yet solid enough to protect our iPad even when dropped. (I’ve witnesses this first hand.) I don’t recommend throwing it across the room or dropping it on cement. But for those occasional times when the iPad happens to slip off your child’s lap or fall on the living room carpet, the PixCase certainly does the trick. And most importantly, the case is fun! With it’s clear, customizable cover, it provides the opportunity to insert a cool design (that you can create yourself!) or better yet, insert any photo that you choose. It’s like a mobile picture frame! And you can change the photo or design as often as you choose with the simple click of your mouse. My kids had hours of fun choosing new family photos to print and insert into the PixCase for iPad 2.
Both my husband and I own iPhones, so we both tried out the PixCase for iPhone 4. Once again, this case did not disappoint. We don’t have a land line phone in our house anymore, so our iPhones are our primary phones. We use them all the time and take them everywhere. And like our requirements for the iPad case, we wanted an iPhone case that could withstand some bumping around without being too bulky or heavy.
The PixCase for iPhone 4 is just what we expected. It provides sturdy protection for the iPhone, yet it’s easy to slip on and off the phone when needed. My husband carries his phone with him in his pocket at work most of the day and mine is typically in my purse or in my pocket. Compared to many of the other cases, the PixCase for iPhone 4 weighed less than most we tried. Yet, it didn’t feel flimsy or unsafe.
Pros:
- The cases were easy to slip on and off of the iPad and iPhone.
- The cases were durable yet not bulky or heavy.
- The ability to personalize your device with a design or a photo is super fun and allows you to add flair and personality!
Cons:
- The iPad 2 case could be a bit sturdier. While it did protect the iPad when dropped a short distance onto a carpeted area, I’d feel better loaning it to my children if I felt that it would be safe when dropped on a hard floor surface.
- The personalizeityourself.com website could be more user-friendly. It took me several attempts to get the design re-sized to fit my iPhone, despite the fact that I was using a pre-set template specifically for the iPhone 4.
- The PixCase is only available for Apple and Blackberry products. They currently do not have any available for Android users.

A Mom’s Perspective
The best part of the PixCases was that we could personalize the phone or iPad 2 in whatever way we wanted. Let’s face it, our cell phones have become a fashion accessory. People choose cases that are more about fashion than they are about function. With the PixCase, I got both. For my first design, I chose to print a family photo from our recent vacation and my husband chose to print a logo for his favorite football team. When more recent photos were available, I simply changed out the photo in my PixCase. And when football season ends, my husband can choose another design or replace it with a photo. The ability to personalize the PixCase was a huge selling point for both of us.
