Kolibree Makes Tooth Brushing Fun for Your Kids!

If you are anything like me, your morning and nights might go something like this, “Did you brush your teeth?…  Did you brush ALL of your teeth?… Come here and let me see.”

Now, thanks to Kolibree, there is a way to monitor your child’s tooth brushing habits without the fight!

What is Kolibree?

Kolibree is the world’s first electric toothbrush with 3D sensors that connect via Bluetooth to the Kolibree app  on your smartphone.  The Kolibree sonic toothbrush connects wirelessly to your smartphone.  Once you connect through the app, you can set up a profile for each of your children (and yourself) and let the fun tooth brushing begin!

For younger children, the app has a pirate game where the onscreen pirate collects gold coins based on where you are brushing your teeth.  There is a diagram that shows which teeth should be brushed and a countdown for that section.  It even shows what area of your mouth is going to be brushed next.  After each section of your child’s mouth has been brushed, the toothbrush automatically shuts off and the data gets saved on the app.

For older children and adults, there is a coaching tooth brushing feature.  Once you are connected and start, it shows you where to brush and for how long.  it highlights each section of your mouth and and automatically shuts off when you are done.  The app not only shows you how often your child brushed, but you can check in to see the quality of your child’s tooth brushing.  The yellow areas below mean that your child needs to spend more time on that area.

Cons

• Sometimes you don’t have your phone with you when you brush your teeth – so it doesn’t get recorded
• Children don’t always remember to switch out the brush attachment to their colored brush – unintended toothbrush sharing can occur!

A Mom’s Perspective

The Kolibree toothbrush was easy to set up and begin using.  I liked the fact that I can see how often my children are tooth brushing and how well they were brushing.  Often with new technology, companies makes it difficult to set up more than one user per device. 

Kolibree made this simple, allowing users to set up multiple user profiles under the same account.  You can purchase additional brush attachments to color code each member of your family.  I found this to be a fantastic tool, especially since we have 7 people in our family and buying everyone their own sonic toothbrush would get pretty expensive. 

However, this also could be seen as a downfall, since children may not always remember to switch out their brush.  The pirate game on the app engaged the kids for the full 2 minutes while they brushed.  They could take control of their own tooth brushing without me having to visually inspect.

As for me, I used the coaching portion of the app.  The first couple of times, I truly had to concentrate.  I think we all have our own pattern when we brush our teeth.  It took me a couple tries to follow the pattern on the app, instead of my own.  For the first few times, I used the app coaching feature, and then brushed again using my own pattern, just so it felt normal!  However, now that I am used to it, I know I am reaching all of the various parts of my mouth and my oral hygiene is improving!
