With five tech-aged children, our home has its share of tablets (some of which have ended up in the tablet graveyard). Yet, our children still fight over whose turn it is to use our newest kids tablet from Kurio, the Kurio Xtreme powered by Intel. In our experiences with tablets, there are a few needs that are apparent when it comes to choosing a kids tablet for our children.
The first trait for a kids tablet to win my approval is:
- Ease-of-use and set-up
- More importantly I need to know, how will it keep my kids safe from online dangers?
- Lastly, but perhaps most important for my children; will they enjoy the tablet and feel it is age appropriate for them?
With this Kids Tablet, Set Up is a Snap!
Within a few minutes, I was able to power on the Kurio Xtreme and set up profiles for each of our children. During the set up process you can choose an avatar or take a photo of your child. I chose to use an avatar with cute blonde hair and freckles, but my 9-year-old son didn’t appreciate that. He quickly changed the profile picture to an actual photo of himself! As part of the set up, you are asked to input each child’s birthday.
The Kurio Xtreme uses the birth date to create security settings based on your child’s age! How simple is that? Now, if you are a little bit more tech-savvy, or if you want to adjust the security, you have the ability to create custom settings for your child.
My children download games quickly and rarely need assistance with figuring out how to use the tablet. They even put their own passcode patterns on their profiles to lock their siblings out of their VERY important business. 😉
Additionally, the Kurio Xtreme kids tablet comes with its own rubber case. You don’t have to worry about tumbles down the stairs or searching for a case that fits with the camera holes.
Parental Controls – Are My Kids Really Safe?
Kurio Xtreme has a built-in “genius” web filter. The company watches 450+ million websites each day. Kurio Xtreme is KidSAFE and COPPA certified. As a parent, you can choose one of the pre-defined settings or you can customize to block or allow specific websites. Website content is filtered into various categories such as; Games, Educational, Media, and ebooks.
What I found great about this tool is that not only is there ability to customize the allowable content on each profile, but you can also choose to allow (or not) social media for those children over 13. Please note – if you choose to allow your 13+ aged children access to social media sites, you still want to monitor what they are posting and who they are “friends” with. Additionally, the Kurio Xtreme has its own kid safe internet browser powered by Google. You don’t have to worry about what ads will pop up or what images will show in the search engine links.
Kurio Xtreme allows the parent to create up to 8 separate profiles. Each profile has the capability of having its own unique rules and restrictions. Not only do you have the ability to set the internet and app safety settings, you also can easily set up time restrictions for each profile. The time management area allows the parent to set time limits for the week days and the weekends separately.
Kurio takes it even one step further. You are able to categorize the apps into defined labels such as games or education. Once you do this, you can choose which categories fall under the time restrictions.
Wait, WHAT? Yes, you heard it correctly! Let me give you an example. If my 12-year-old daughter has downloaded several game apps, but she also uses her ebook app, I can exclude that category from time restrictions. Also, if you don’t want educational apps to be restricted, you do not have to include that in the time limits!
But Will My Kids Approve It?
Yes! Kurio Xtreme is powered by an Intel® Atom® Z2520–1.2 GHz Dual core processor. That means that your children will be able to play all of their favorite games without a speed lag or delay. The Kurio Xtreme is loaded with nearly 100 apps! And of course there a Google Play store and a Kurio store to download additional apps.
One of the best features of this tablet is the pre-loaded Kurio Motion Games. Using the front facing camera, the tablet has motion sensors that allow for interactive games, including motion sports. The Kurio Xtreme comes with a stand to allow the tablet to sit on a table for the motion games. It also comes with 16GB of storage space, with an expandable storage of a 32 GB slot.

A Mom’s Perspective
The Kurio Xtreme is an affordable kids tablet that give parents control over how much screen time children get. It also has advanced web filtering options for multiple profile configurations to keep your children safe from online dangers at any age. The Intel Atom Processor allows for fast game speeds and online activity.
We love that the battery life is about 8-10 hours and it takes about 2 hours to fully charge. From a mom who has used several different brands of tablets, the Kurio Xtreme gives me the best control over what my children are doing online and the apps they are downloading.
*I was given a Kurio Xtreme in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
