Looking for Cable Alternatives? Try Chromecast

Are you tired of seeing your cable bill each month?  At first the deal seemed like a great one when you signed up, but 24+ months later, your bill tends to creep up.  Many of us have already cut the cord but there are still a number of us that linger on with cable.

Why Haven’t People Dropped Cable Yet?

  1. Who has the time to research?
  2. There are so many cable alternatives, it gets confusing!
  3. If they drop their cable provider, they lose all the saved shows and movies on their DVR
  4. They are not sure they can live without the convenience of a DVR
  5. Buyers remorse, what if they switch and they regret their decision?
  6. Again, who has time to research all of this?

I have been testing the Google Chromecast Streaming Media Player for the past 6+ months.  At only $35 it was a cheap way to test streaming and assess the ease of asking our Google Home to play content I’m interested in on our family room TV.

What is a Chromecast Streaming Media Player?

Chromecast is a small circular device that fits in the palm of your hand.  Simply attach it to your TV via the HDMI cord and plug the included power cord into the Chromecast and into a power strip or wall outlet.

To see content on your TV, you can stream from apps on your…

  • Android phone or iPhone
  • Tablet
  • Laptop

Use one Chromecast for each TV where you’d like to stream content.  Chromecast has 802.11ac built-in WiFi to connect with your wireless home network to access the Internet.

This means if you have a Chromecast on your family room TV and you screencast your show from the app on your phone then go to your bedroom with your phone, you can screencast just where you left off to your bedroom TV with Chromecast.  Pretty slick.

The power resides now on your phone versus an expensive DVR that you used to need for every TV.

Cable Alternatives – Chromecast with Voice

As I mentioned previously, the reason I got a Chromecast is because I wanted to use my Google Home to turn on shows on my family room TV.  I can ask for Twilight Zone on Netflix and it pops up on my TV.

Or, I can watch some of my favorite music videos on YouTube by asking Google Home to “play Never Enough on YouTube on the family room TV.”  The TV turns on and my video plays.  It’s so convenient.  And such a great tune!

Here’s what you can do with the Google Chromecast, as one of the easiest cable alternatives…

Watch TV & Movies

You can watch TV shows, movies, videos, and more from CBS, NBC, ABC, HBO Now, SHOWTIME, Netflix, Sling, HGTV, Disney Now, USA, E!, History Channel, and so much more.  Though some require a subscription.

Watch Sports

Watch the sports you’re interested in from Fox Sports, NLB.com, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, NFL, NBA, ESPN, and so much more! (Again, some require a subscription).

See Your Pictures

Screencast your photos and videos from Google Photos, Picasa photos, Chrome, TED, YouTube Gaming and more.

Listen

Listen to your favorite music, playlists, and podcasts through your TV.  Just pull up Spotify, Pandora, Google Play Music, iHeart Radio, YouTube Music, Slacker, Vevo, Tune In Radio, etc.

Play Games

Screencast games from your phone such as Just Dance, Deer Hunter, Monopoly, Wheel of Fortune, Risk, Twitch, Scrabble, and more.

Your phone/tablet/laptop is the remote control, making it easy to select shows/songs/sports and screencast to your TV.  All the control is in your hands from volume to pausing to skipping.  And all the while, you can use your phone as you normally do.

The Chromecast Streaming Media Player works with over 2,000 apps – the ones you know and love.

The Chromecast Streaming Media Player is available for $35 plus shipping through Best Buy.
