Make Dad Smile for Father’s Day + Giveaway

Make Dad Smile

With Father’s Day right around the corner, I have been reflecting on my Dad and how great a dad he really was. He passed away from cancer about 3 1/2 years ago and there is still that empty hole – little sayings that he said, things that my boys might do or say that they learned from their Papa and even our littlest boy talking about how he has a hard time remembering his Papa.

When I think of my dad, I always get a smile on my face – especially when I think of the quirky sayings that he had that still pop up in family conversation.

My dad was a hard worker and taught me that same work ethic. He began his own dairy business (yes, I grew up with the cows!) and would always say that “dairymen don’t get holidays off”. He was right, he was basically on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. He taught me to work hard and to do my best. It was expected of me.

While the dairy kept him busy, I always knew that I was loved and knew that he would always have time for us kids (I came from a family of four girls…I was the oldest). I could always count on him to be at my piano recitals, band and choir concerts, games that I was cheering at, you name it, if I was involved in some way, he was there.

Dad and sisters

My education was important. My dad and mom put all four of us through both private Christian school, K-12, as well as through college. This was a huge sacrifice. And while some might think I was spoiled because they paid for the bulk of my college, I recognize that the sacrifice that they made allowed me to get a huge head start into life because I did not have a big debt to pay off.

Once my husband and I started having children, my dad and mom always gifted money to our boys for birthdays and Christmas with the expectation that it would be put away for their education. They wanted to be a blessing to them as well.

But the thing that I value the most was his love for the Lord. He instilled Christian values in me and taught me that my walk with Christ was more important than anything else. He demonstrated this in his own life as well. He was well respected in the community and was not afraid to share what he believed.

When my dad knew that the time was close and that he would be passing away soon, he met with our Pastor. His main concern was that the gospel be preached at his Memorial service. He knew that there would be people in attendance that did not have a relationship with the Lord and this was his last chance to share the Christ with these people.

The song “Bless the Lord” by Matt Redman was sung at his funeral. The last verse says, “And on that day when my strength is failing, the end draws near and my time is done. Still my soul will sing Your praise unending, ten thousand years and then forevermore!” That was him – even through the tough times, he held fast to his Lord and Savior and would praise Him.

My husband has many of these same qualities. He continuously shows my boys  and I how much he loves us and values us. He encourages me to take time for me and whenever I am out of town, I am always impressed that I come home to a house that is much cleaner than when I left. He is a man of God and I always see him diving into the Bible, books and devotionals trying to soak in the Word as much as he can.
