Let’s face it. There are those times as a mom when you need your young child to keep out of your hair so that you can get something done. It’s easy to give them a tablet and let them occupy themselves. My son likes to watch shows on Disney Jr. and Netflix. While most of the shows that he watches are just fine, there are times when he surfs and finds something that I really don’t want him to watch (even with a kid’s lock.)
Recently, I was introduced to a great video app that is perfect for my son and gives me peace of mind that he is watching something appropriate. Owlegories TV app is a video app of 15 minute shows that use creation to teach kids about God.
The banner verse for Owlegories TV is Psalm 19:1-4: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”
Each episode opens with a catchy song that I hear my son singing even when he is not watching. After the opening song, there are some adorable baby owls that share the Bible verse that goes with the lesson of the video. Then we get to hang out with Violet, Gus, Joey, Nora and Twitch as they meet with the Professor that sends them on an adventure in creation.
The Professor challenges them to find 3 ways water (or the sun, the seed, etc.) teaches us about who God is. While they are on their adventure, they find these clues and share them in the classroom at the end. For example, the first truth that they find in “The Water” adventure is “like water from an endless spout, My love for you will never run out.” They are at a waterfall when they find this truth.
Big People Can Appreciate Owlegories TV Too!
The videos also have a little bit of humor for the big people. The “evil” character is a big bird named Devlin. HaHa! I love the play on words! What I found interesting as well is that my older boys were intrigued by the videos and would hover over my youngest son’s shoulder while he was watching.
The truths that the owls find in creation are just as relevant for me and my older boys and I think it is great that they hear these promises in a simple way that they can remember. I think it is also helpful that the videos compare the promises to nature – it is an easy way to remember what is being taught. And, every time you see those things in nature, you will think about the truths that you have learned about God.
You are able to download the Owlegories TV app for free and the first episode is free. After that, you can purchase additional episodes for $.99 each. Currently, there are a total of 7 episodes: The Sun, The Seed, The Water, The Wind, The Ant, The Fruit and The Butterfly. At approximately 15 minutes each, that is almost 2 hours of video streaming. I think back to my days of buying DVD’s for my older children and recognize that this is a great deal.
The Owlegories TV app is currently available for free on both an Apple and Android platform. In-app purchases of additional videos are available at $.99 each. You can also purchase vol. 1 and 2 on DVD at their online store for $11.97 each. Amazon has the videos available for just under $13. The videos are also available at Family Christian Stores, Lifeway Christian Stores, and Walmart.
A Mom’s Perspective
As a Christian mom, I want my kids watching clean shows that I can trust. While they don’t always need to be Christian-based, I consider that a huge bonus. To have an app, like Owlegories TV, that is entertaining and is teaching my kids truths about God is wonderful.
One other intriguing idea is a Memory Verse App called Owlegories: Memory Verses that they are advertising in the Owlegories TV app as coming soon. This app will help young kids memorize God’s word. In the app, kids will hear Bible Verses as they try to catch the owls as they fly, run, and jump around the screen.
Kids can also play a memory verse scramble game that will help kids learn the order of the verses. They can also have fun hearing the verses in a number of different and silly voices. Owlegories TV is a fun entertaining way to learn about God’s truths, helping to give our children guidance and light on their paths through childhood.
* I was given a coupon code to download the first 4 episodes. All opinions are my own.
