Ever since six months after my son was born, I have been drinking a protein shake in the morning. That’s when I began my morning walks too. I was determined to lose my baby weight. I discovered the importance of protein to fill me up without filling me out.
Protein is in every cell in your body; your hair and nails are mostly made up of protein. It is the building block of bones, muscles, skin, blood, and cartilage. Protein is essential to keep your body running at its best. Interestingly enough, unlike fat and carbohydrates, your body does not store protein, but it needs protein on an ongoing basis.
I have enjoyed many types of protein shakes over the years. I typically use frozen fruit and spinach as my staples. But I was ready for something different. Something chocolate, something with cinnamon. So with some inspiration from my son’s smoothie book, I created what I call the Mexican Chocolate Protein Shake. Why Mexican you ask? Because of the cinnamon.
- 1 scoop Phase 8 Protein Powder
- 1 banana
- 1 tsp. Cinnamon
- 1 tsp. Flax Seed Oil
- 1 tbsp. sliced almonds
- 4 ice cubes
- Pour all ingredients in a blender and blend until all or most of the ice cubes disappear.
- Drink up, yum!
Phase 8 Protein Powder
To make this shake, I bought a canister of chocolate Phase 8 Protein Powder by MUSCLETECH at my local Walmart, in the health section. When I am looking for a protein powder, I look for at least 26 grams of protein, low sugar grams, and it must be relatively low in carbohydrates.
The Phase 8 Protein Powder has 26 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar, and 8 grams of carbohydrates. As I am gluten-free, I also make sure that no wheat products are found in the ingredients.
I read online that Phase 8 Protein Powders have a great taste, so I was anxious to try it. I am happy to report that it has a really good flavor. One shake in the morning fills me up until lunch time, so protein shakes are great for meal replacement.
Bella Sport Rocket Blender
To encourage my kids to drink more protein shakes (instead of sweetened cereals) in the morning, I bought each of them their own individual smoothie maker for Christmas. It was their first appliance! I bought the Bella Sport Rocket Blender for $17.94 from Walmart.com.
I wasn’t sure how the Bella Sport Rocket Blender would do, blending up ice cubes, but I have to say, it works pretty well. When you’re done blending, just change the lid from the blender blade to the sport cup top and you’re ready for breakfast on the go…without spills!
Find the Phase 8 Protein Powder in the health section of Walmart or online for $23.74. I’ve heard the Peanut Butter flavor is fantastic, so I’ll probably order that flavor online next time. The Bella Sport Rocket Blender is available at Walmart.com for $17.94.
