About 11 years ago, I said goodbye to Tivo. It was a hard breakup. I had committed a lifetime (service) to Tivo, but it was time to move on. I didn’t want to leave, but I had no choice.
You see, after I moved, just 10 minutes away in the same city, we left our old TV carrier and started with Verizon FIOS. Unknowingly FIOS was not in love with Tivo as I was. They wouldn’t support it. I was flabbergasted. I tried working on it for 8 hours , on my own, to make Tivo work with FIOS, but to no avail. I still remember how I felt the day I had to say goodbye.
Verizon’s DVR was decent, but it was no Tivo. Truthfully, I lost my enthusiasm for TV like I once had.
All these years later, Tivo and I are back together. Yes, I still have Verizon FIOS, but apparently the two play well together now. WellConnectedMom is now a Tivo ambassador, so I get to tell you the original reasons why I loved Tivo…as well as many new more features our family loves.
In this first article, I would like to give you an overview of what makes Tivo ….Tivo. In future articles, I’ll go into more depth.
Tivo Roamio Types
The latest Tivo available is called the Tivo Roamio and it comes in three different products:
The one we are trying out is the middle one, the Tivo Roamio Plus. The Tivo Roamio Plus has many features including:
- 150 hours of recorded video (Standard Definition)
- 6 TV tuners (watch one channel and record up to 6 shows at one time!)
- Remote watching – you can be traveling and connect to your Tivo at home to watch your recorded shows
- Incredible Search function – you can search for shows and movies from your TV provider, Netflix, or Amazon Prime
- Review Movie Collections – Tivo analysts do the work for you and research what movies are available through your TV provider, Netflix, or Amazon Prime. Collections include:
- Oscar Movies
- Best Animated Movies
- Family Movies
- etc.
Only the Tivo Romio Plus DVR and the Tivo Roamio Pro DVR offer remote watching. You can purchase a Tivo Stream separately if you’d like to watch your Tivo shows from the Tivo Roamio DVR remotely. Curious to know more? Here are some more differences…
As you can see, with Tivo you get more recording hours, you can search the Internet for shows & movies, and can even access your home movies and photos!
Installation
Of course, I couldn’t not write about the Tivo Roamio without telling you about the installation process with Verizon FIOS, since this is where I had to end using Tivo so many years ago.
I was excited about being able to watch/record 6 shows at once, but what puzzled me was the Verizon’s Cable Card only supports a dual tuner. I called Verizon to find out if the Tivo Roamio would be able to record 6 shows, they said no. I was so bummed. Granted, it’s great still to have 2 channels with Tivo Roamio, but 6 would be better!
Now, to use the Tivo Roamio, you need a TV Cable Card that you can get from your TV provider. If you have a DVR already from your TV provider, it should have a TV Cable Card in it. All you need to do is remove it from your cable provider’s DVR and put it into your Tivo Roamio.
In my case, my husband wasn’t ready yet to give up his DVR with all of his recordings on it, so I called Verizon and ordered a cable card to put in our new Tivo Roamio Plus. Verizon didn’t charge me for the Cable Card itself, but I did have to pay $20 for the shipping of the card (rip off on shipping, huh?). We also pay an additional $4.99/mo for the extra Cable Card.
2 Channels or 6 Channels Recording?
I installed the Verizon FIOS Cable card and went through the easy Tivo Roamio setup process. After Tivo was all set up, I checked to see how many channels I could record at once. Tivo told me I would be able to record 6 whereas Verizon said I would only be able to record 2 shows.
I was so excited to find out that I could indeed record 6 channels at once! Wow! I’m not even sure how that’s possible, but it works! I will never have a conflict between shows again, that’s huge!
A Mom’s Perspective
I could not be more thrilled with the new Tivo Roamio Plus. I love that I can record whatever show I want and it doesn’t interfere with my kids’ or my husband’s favorite shows. In the past, this created an issue because of a “season pass,” or the automatic recording of our favorite shows every time a new one was one. We often had conflicts of several season pass shows recording at the same time.
There were times when we’d have to make a choice which show got recorded. Now we all can see our shows. Are you a Tivo fan?
