TECHNOTES: Summer DIY Projects Resources

After visiting the awesome home HGTV is giving away in Palmetto Bluffs, SC, I have been registering every day to try to win it!  It’s gorgeous and I absolutely loved the neighborhood.  I have also been entering on DIYNetwork.com for a second chance to win each day.

In the process of trying to win, I’ve taken the opportunity to look through some of the content on both the HGTV and DIY Network websites.  Both websites are great for project ideas. As a dreamer DIY enthusiast, their websites have enticed me to dig further for projects we can do with our kids this Summer.

DIY Projects Resources

I have been doing a little investigation for some resources to help families with Summer DIY projects.

Paint

Thinking of painting a room or two this Summer?  Painting is one of those DIY projects that always seems to be needed. For some people, choosing the color stumps them and they delay the decision for months because they are worried they will get the colors wrong.

The Paint Tester (for Android and iOS) can jumpstart this process for you.  Using Augmented Reality (AR), the app can apply different colors to your walls, simply by pointing your phone’s camera to your walls!  Already have paint samples taped on your wall? Paint Tester can expand it to fill the whole wall!

Project Color (Android and iOS) by Home Depot uses AR similarly.  You can even use the app to look at a picture of a color you like on your friend’s wall and it will tell you which color to purchase at Home Depot.

Fix Things

Undoubtedly, you have a number of repairs around your house, it’s part of the fun of home ownership! Many people are afraid to attempt to fix things as DIY projects, but I ran across a cool app called iFix It that houses a wealth of fix it info.

Anywhere from fixing a cracked door jamb to patching a torn screen, to repairing wood dents with wood filler to using a Multimeter (had to use one for my son’s science project last year), to stitching car seat rips to fixing your PC or even phone!

Find a project you’re interested in and they show you the step-by-step process on how to fix something.  Some of the projects refer you to the web for more info. on a specific project. A great app to have in your back pocket when it’s time to fix things around the house.

Build -YouTube

YouTube is a great place to find DIY projects videos to help you build just about anything.  They key is to be specific in your search.  I found searching for “DIY how to _______,” fill in the blank with whatever what I’m interested and it pulls up a lot of videos.

Find anything from how to stain, to building a workbench to fixing a leaky toilet to building a birdhouse, to making a toy chest for your kid’s room.

The DIY projects are only limited by your imagination!  Best yet, you can download the YouTube app onto your phone or tablet for how-to instructions right where you need them.

And, here’s a trick you may not know of.  If you see some projects you really want to try but don’t have time for right now, near the thumbs up and thumbs down area to rate a video, you’ll see a plus sign with three and a half small horizontal lines next to it.  Click on this and you can create a new “playlist.”

Create one called DIY Wood or DIY Kids Projects, DIY How to Use Tools, whatever you’d like, you can create tons of playlists.  Then save videos to these playlists so you can find your saved future projects more easily.

I also use playlists on YouTube for my favorite music videos and karaoke songs, so there are lots of uses for playlists.

Find Projects & Build – Pinterest

And of course, we can’t forget Pinterest for tons of wood projects, building projects, and more!

Easier Way to Buy Supplies

A number of DIY projects videos and blogs include plans or a shopping list of supplies to buy before beginning your project.  Make it easy on yourself and order everything online or through the Home Depot or Lowes app.  You can have supplies delivered or order them ahead of time and easily pick them up in the store.

Don’t forget if you don’t want to cut wood yourself, you can purchase wood from these stores, give them the dimensions you need, and they will cut the wood for you for free.

The Home Depot and Lowes apps great for keeping track of things you need for your projects.  You can bookmark items for future projects/purchases, you can check inventory in your store (and others) before going to the store to purchase, and scan in all your receipts to make returns a lot easier.

The Home Depot app lists local DIY workshops as well as other useful apps to help with your projects.

As you can see, there are a lot of resources out there to help you learn how to build and fix things and most resources are free.  People love sharing how they build things with others.  It helps other DIYers as well as gives them a chance to show off what they made.  Everyone benefits.

Have fun with your DIY projects this Summer!  Oh, and if you’re afraid to try, consider this quote from Vincent van Gogh…

“What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?”

                                                                           – Vincent van Gogh
