Using Your Phone with One Hand Securely

by Lori Cunningham

FlyGrip - Hold phone with one hand securely

Earlier this year, we recommended in our Valentines Day Guide, a nifty gadget that lets you hold your phone with one hand securely.  It’s called the FlyGrip and it was a new product we discovered while at the Consumer Electronics Show this year.  I received a sample of FlyGrip and have been using it faithfully ever since.  Recently, FlyGrip came out with a new and improved model, called the FlyGrip Gravity, which is available in more colors, made with a stronger plastic composite, and an easier to open and close grip/kickstand.

The new FlyGrip Gravity also has a longer kickstand to help hold your device up at a higher angle.  You can see the tail of the FlyGrip is longer on the Gravity (the yellow one) vs. the original FlyGrip tail (the pink one).

Holding Your Phone with One Hand Confidently

The FlyGrip is one of those things that you think you don’t need, until you begin using it.  It offers such a great convenience.

The main three benefits the FlyGrip provides are:

1.  Security

  • As you walk down a street or hallway, you feel more confident that you won’t drop your phone with the extra support the grip gives your fingers
  • As you walk, the FlyGrip is visible to people passing by, offering perhaps some extra security that your phone won’t be snatched from your fingers

2.  Finger Multitasking

  • The FlyGrip allows you to better hold your phone, giving your thumb a full range of motion to reach all areas of your touchscreen, and let me tell you, this is a big help, especially with today’s bigger phones!
  • Great for taking self-portraits, the FlyGrip helps you keep your phone steady

2.  Table Top Convenience

  • The FlyGrip also doubles as a kickstand for your phone – vertically and horizontally – so you can keep up with messages or watch a video easily
  • The kickstand also works great to hold your phone in a good position for a bedside alarm clock
  • You can use your phone camera with the free iSitter app as a free baby video surveillance camera, while your baby is napping.  The FlyGrip helps to keep your phone upright
  • The FlyGrip can also be used as a kickstand for tablets up to 10 inches

The FlyGrip comes with everything you need to adhere it to your phone or case… an alcohol wipe to clean it, comfort/fitting pads, the FlyGrip, and adhesive.  After cleaning the back of your phone you place the FlyGrip in the middle of the bottom half of your phone or case.  Apply with pressure then let go.  Within 30 minutes, you’re ready to go.

Now you may be wondering, can you transfer the FlyGrip onto other phones or cases when it’s time to upgrade?  The answer is yes.  You just need to take a butter knife and carefully lift up under the FlyGrip to release the adhesive.  There shouldn’t be any adhesive left on your phone or case.  But you will need to buy a new adhesive sticker from FlyGrip to apply to a new case or phone.  You cant get a 3-pack for $2.49 plus shipping from their site.

The FlyGrip comes in a multitude of colors and patterns, including some cool designer looks and is available from FlyGrip for $29.99 and includes a free case for your phone (most phones available).

A Mom’s PerspectiveFamily Technology at it's Best

The other day I got out of my car in a parking lot just in time to see a man closing the liftgate on his car.  Unfortunately, the same hand he used to close the liftgate was holding his phone.  His phone came crashing down on the pavement, straight on its glass.  Because of course, we all know Murphy’s Law, if your phone is going to fall, it will fall on the  glass, not on its back.   I know the look on the man’s face.  It’s the same one I had when I dropped my phone and smashed the glass a while ago.  Ouch, that hurts.   Unfortunately, this scenario happens all too often, as we are good multi-taskers and phones can slip easily from our hands.

The FlyGrip provides you with extra confidence that you are holding your phone securely.  It’s great for kids too…just for extra insurance that they don’t drop their iPod Touch or phone…or even yours for that matter!  The FlyGrip even comes with adhesive pads you can stick on to close the gap between your finger and the FlyGrip if you need it.  I used them on my first one and they are like foam, so they conform to your fingers.

You can’t really go wrong with the FlyGrip, it is so “handy,” pardon the pun!  It gives you great confidence to hold your phone with one hand.  The only thing that makes it harder to buy the FlyGrip outright is the fact that it costs $30.  Granted, it comes with a free case, but I think parents would be more inclined to buy one for every member of the family if they were less expensive.

The FlyGrip folds flat when not in use, so you can still easily stick your phone in a pocket or phone jogging armband.  And the new magnetic close makes it easier to open the FlyGrip kickstand and close it.  And I think it’s pretty amazing that the FlyGrip now supports tablets.  What a great convenience for keeping your tablet upright while watching Netflix or YouTube.

FlyGrip is one of those type of products that you think you can live without until you use it.  Then you can’t live without it.

How do you keep your phone secure?
