Just this week, Apple announced their latest iPhone, the Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, available September 16th. You may have heard some of the buzz, I know I did. Interestingly enough, much of it was true, but some of it was slightly off. If you don’t have the time to watch Apple’s iPhone 7 introduction (or would rather do other things), we understand.
To make sure you’re up-to-speed on the latest iPhone 7 offerings, we’ve put together this “cheat sheet” for you to keep you in the know!
iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus
OK, right off the bat, once again, the Apple iPhone is available in two sizes. The 4.7″ screen iPhone 7 and the 5.5″ iPhone 7 Plus screen.
Both have many similar features, but the iPhone 7 has a longer battery life and the iPhone 7 Plus has a higher definition screen with more pixels. You can see the comparison of the two iPhone 7 phones on the Apple website.
Style
The Apple iPhone 7 phone has been refined in a subtle more sophisticated way. With it’s seamless touch, the iPhone 7 is a beauty to behold.
It is now splash and water-resistant, and features a new home button, designed to be more durable and pressure-sensitive. It’s even customizable…and of course, continues to act as your Touch ID to unlock and secure your iPhone 7.
Black is the New Black
Apple is finally introducing a new jet black finish to their line-up, available only on the 128 and 256 GB models. It’s beautiful. Other colors include silver, gold, and rose gold finishes.
Camera
The front-facing camera remains the same as the iPhone 6 with 12 MP, with the exception of adding wide-angle and telephoto lenses (on the iPhone 7 Plus). However, the front-facing selfie camera bumped up from 5 MP to 7 MP, allowing for a better-looking selfie shot.
Apple updated the number of LED’s in their flash to improve low-light photography and added flicker detection to assist with artificial light.
Apple’s Retina HD display delivers exceptional color management – one of the best in the smartphone industry. Your pictures’ colors will now look more truer to life – to the colors of the scenery you used as the focus of your picture.
4k Video
The Apple iPhone 7 now shoots in 4K resolution — with over 8 million pixels! You will be making some very impressive high definition videos for sure. You can even film in slow motion and capture time-lapse video.
Extra Zoom
The iPhone 7 Plus gives you great close-up photos and videos with its 2x optical zoom and 10 digital zoom for photos and 6x digital zoom for video.
Processing Power
Apple claims that the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus now have the most powerful chip ever embedded in a smartphone, the A10 Fusion Chip.
This chip makes the iPhone 7 2 times faster than the iPhone 6 and affords the iPhone 7 to longest battery life ever in a smartphone…up to 2 hours more than the iPhone 6.
Sound
Another first, the Apple iPhone 7 will now have a stereo speaker system and more powerful speakers, enabling a sound 2 times louder than the iPhone 6s.
Apple has also removed the headphone jack. Included with the new iPhone 7 is a set of EarPods with a Lightning Connector, which means you can no longer charge your phone and listen to music at the same time…unless….
You buy the upcoming AirPods, which are wireless headphones that connect to your iPhone 7, giving you more freedom and clarity of sound.
Phone Home
In addition to the more powerful A10 Fusion Chip processing power, the LTE speeds are now 3 times faster than the iPhone 6, measured at 450 Mbps, which means you’ll be able to pick up a stronger signal and hopefully have less dropped calls.
And with 25 more LTE bands, you’ll have great worldwide roaming available. Easily answer 3rd party apps now like WhatsApp right through your phone.
Storage
Apple’s iPhone 7’s lowest amount of storage available now is 32 now and it goes all the way up to 256GB of storage! Remember the days of 8 GB and 16 GB of storage? Those days are over!
Now you’ll be able to store more games, pictures, videos, and music and still keep taking pictures…for a longer time period.
Apple Watch
If you’re a fan of Apple, the new Apple Watch, Series Two, might be intriguing to you as well. I started wearing a watch again after a 6 years hiatus, and it’s very helpful, when working in conjunction with my phone.
With built-in GPS, a super fast dual-core processor, a brighter display, and water resistance up to 50 meters, the Apple Watch is worth looking into. Find out more on the Apple Watch page on their website.
Should You Upgrade?
There are definitely some benefits to upgrading to the Apple iPhone 7, like the faster processor, an improved front and back-facing camera, and more storage. If you have an iPhone 4 or 5, upgrading to the iPhone 7 is probably a good idea, you’ll notice a lot of improvement right away.
Of course, another good option, is to upgrade to the iPhone 6S or iPhone 6 Plus, as soon you’ll see a lot of people trying to sell them to upgrade to the iPhone 7.
If you already have the iPhone 6, we’d recommend waiting…besides, who knows if the iPhone 7S is just around the corner, which might offer slightly better specs. Want to evaluate the differences between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 further? NewAtlas does a good job comparing the two iPhone versions.
Technology never stops changing and when you think back to the first iPhone, the iPhone has come a long way. And expect many more versions of the iPhone planned for the future!
