{"id":11599,"date":"2013-11-23T03:38:49","date_gmt":"2013-11-22T20:38:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/?p=11599"},"modified":"2013-11-23T03:38:49","modified_gmt":"2013-11-22T20:38:49","slug":"netflix-isnt-just-about-streaming-movies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/netflix-isnt-just-about-streaming-movies\/","title":{"rendered":"Netflix isn&#8217;t Just About Streaming Movies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have been a streaming movies <a href=\"http:\/\/netflix.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Netflix <\/a>user on and off for years, but most recently, for a little over a year. \u00a0My daughter loves it and probably watches it more than anyone. \u00a0She has caught up on her favorite shows, &#8220;Phineas &amp; Ferb,&#8221; &#8220;Good Luck, Charlie,&#8221; and &#8220;Jessie,&#8221; from the very beginning episode to the present. \u00a0We have also love streaming movies on Netflix as a family and for a &#8220;date night&#8221; with my husband and I.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a member of Netflix&#8217;s Stream Team, I will be writing about Netflix each month. \u00a0Last month we covered bullying in the form of cyberbullying in our article, <a href=\"https:\/\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/16\/cyber-bullying-get-involved-before-it-happens\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cyberbullying &#8211; Get Involved BEFORE it Happens<\/a>, as last month was National Bullying Month. \u00a0This month, however, I wanted to write about a whole area of Netflix most people don&#8217;t know about. \u00a0Did you know there&#8217;s a whole section on Science and Tech TV? \u00a0Or if you&#8217;re likely to get diabetes, will you change your diet for the better now?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-11609\" alt=\"Beyond the Movie  The New World  Nightmare in Jamestown\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2013\/11\/Beyond-the-Movie-The-New-World-Nightmare-in-Jamestown.jpg?resize=645%2C363&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"645\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2013\/11\/Beyond-the-Movie-The-New-World-Nightmare-in-Jamestown.jpg?resize=1024%2C575&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2013\/11\/Beyond-the-Movie-The-New-World-Nightmare-in-Jamestown.jpg?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2013\/11\/Beyond-the-Movie-The-New-World-Nightmare-in-Jamestown.jpg?w=1587&amp;ssl=1 1587w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My daughter is in fifth grade and studying \u00a0the discovery of America and how the Spanish dominated new land and gold discovery back in that era. \u00a0 \u00a0I found an interesting documentary entitled <strong>Beyond the Movie: \u00a0The New World: Nightmare in Jamestown<\/strong>, which brings to life the words she read about in her social studies book. \u00a0There were 215 men who made it to what is now known as Virginia. \u00a0They thought their biggest worry were the Spaniards, they didn&#8217;t anticipate the Indian attacks. \u00a0More than 70% of these men died due to illness, Indian attacks, and even in-fighting, as today&#8217;s archaeologists can best determine. \u00a0This movie goes back and forth between a film about Jamestown and what the archaeologists have found recently to shed more light on the story. \u00a0It&#8217;s very interesting.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1589\" alt=\"Family Technology at it's Best\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2010\/12\/WellConnectedMom-LOGO-MOM.jpg?resize=165%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"165\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2010\/12\/WellConnectedMom-LOGO-MOM.jpg?resize=165%2C300&amp;ssl=1 165w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2010\/12\/WellConnectedMom-LOGO-MOM.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 165px) 100vw, 165px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A Mom&#8217;s Perspective<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Take some time to browse through Netflix to see what interesting videos you can unearth. \u00a0I had no idea the wealth of knowledge available right under my nose until I started using the Search box on Netflix. \u00a0I was fascinated to learn that in a matter of just a few years, full genomic test results, showing the entire genetic code of our body will be available at a reasonable price. \u00a0Wow. \u00a0After watching the video, <strong>Cracking Your Genetic Code<\/strong>, I&#8217;m not sure if I&#8217;d want the information or not. \u00a0But I do know this, I sure don&#8217;t want insurance companies to get their hands on my genomic information. \u00a0It takes all the risk out of the equation for them and they could dramatically increase health and life insurance rates based on this information for individuals.<\/p>\n<p>I am excited about using Netflix as a tool to enhance my kids&#8217; learning about events in history and science too. \u00a0It had not occurred to me before to utilize Netflix as a visual supplement to the things my kids are learning at school. \u00a0Science and technology are essential for kids to not only grasp, but appreciate and I&#8217;m always looking for apps, books, and movies to help in this endeavor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How about you, have you found any movies on Netflix that you believe is enhancing your child&#8217;s education?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0<em>I am a member of the Netflix Stream Team and was provided with streaming service for my time.
