If you multiply that across the US, there are over 20,000 texts being sent every second! Now that&#8217;s a lot of communicating!\u00a0 But are teens communicating at times and places that are appropriate?<\/span> This article will provide a good foundation for you to have a conversation with your teen about cellphone safety.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cellphones can give teens a tremendous boost in their personal safety since they can call someone immediately if they need help or are stranded.\u00a0 Teens can let their parents know where they are, call for directions to get out of an unknown place, etc.\u00a0 According to a national survey from <a href=\"http:\/\/ctia.org\/\">CTIA<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harrisinteractive.com\">Harris Interactive<\/a>, <\/span><\/p>\n<address><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">80% [of teens] say their cell phone provides a sense of security while on the go, confirming that the cell phone has become their mobile safety net when needing a ride (79%), getting important information (51%), or just helping out someone in trouble (35%).<\/span><\/address>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But cellphones can also pose many risks. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There has been a lot in the news in the past few years about the dangers of driving while using a cellphone or texting&#8211; and justly so. We have all heard tragic stories where young people were killed as a result. Even if your child doesn&#8217;t drive yet, cellphone safety is still a concern. In this post, we&#8217;ll cover cellphone safety while behind the wheel and general safety tips for your teen (and you!)<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Cellphone Use While Driving<span style=\"color: #888888;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.thewellconnectedhome.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cell_phone_driving.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1383\" title=\"cell_phone_driving\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2010\/08\/cell_phone_driving-300x201.jpg?resize=300%2C201&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Talking on the phone while driving quadrupples your chance of getting into an accident.\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2010\/08\/cell_phone_driving.jpg?resize=300%2C201&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2010\/08\/cell_phone_driving.jpg?w=470&amp;ssl=1 470w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <\/span><a title=\"Read more about the LG Text Survey\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/do-as-i-say-not-as-i-text-98497159.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LG Text Survey <\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">found that nearly half of the parents <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">surveyed admitted to texting while driving. So it&#8217;s no surprise to learn that 45% of teens have likewise admitted to texting while driving. Yet, only 4% of surveyed parents believed their teen was texting and driving. If we are texting and driving, most likely so will our kids. Teaching our children safety begins with us, as parents, and what behaviors we model for them.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">What Are the Risks of Driving while Texting or Talking on the Phone?<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to Diane Griffith, reporter for <\/span><a title=\"Can we pay attention while driving?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myoptumhealth.com\/portal\/Information\/item\/Texting+and+Talking+While+Driving%3A+Why+?archiveChannel=Home%2FArticle&amp;clicked=true\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">myOptumHealth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>&#8220;You have four times the risk of being in a crash if you&#8217;re on the phone while driving. Talking on a cell phone while driving lowers your reaction time, studies confirm. This is believed to be caused by a phenomenon known as &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">perceptual <\/span><\/em><\/span><a id=\"hlnavlink_28-navLink\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>blindness<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>.&#8221; It suggests that when a person focuses on one task (like talking on the phone), he or she fails to notice unexpected distractions &#8211; even when looking at them.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p>By the time a\u00a0driver using his\/her cellphone notices they need to brake ASAP, it&#8217;s too late. More rear-end crashes occur as a result of cellphone using drivers than non-cellphone using drivers.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If your teen is driving the car with other teens in it, distractions will occur.\u00a0 Watch this 31 second video to see how quickly\u00a0accidents happen.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t worry, although an accident is implied, this video is not one of those gory one&#8217;s that haunt you for weeks.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"580\" height=\"360\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/JPAajshrsa8?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x402061&amp;color2=0x9461ca&amp;border=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mceTemp\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>General Safety<\/strong> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">OK, great, your teen is not texting while driving (you hope!).\u00a0 But texting or talking on their cellphone can still be unsafe. As you have seen from the video, talking on the phone or texting creates a lot of distraction. Often times, the teen is not aware of his\/her surroundings while using his\/her phone. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a general rule, make sure your teen always keeps a keen eye on what is going on around him\/her.\u00a0\u00a0Teens need to be taught that just because they are on the phone, the world does not stop around them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Walking while Talking or Texting<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This could be an accident waiting to happen. Kidnappers and predators are looking for people who are distracted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Walking to your car alone in a crowded parking lot. You will be distracted with your conversation, giving strangers the upper edge in pushing you into the car and letting themselves in.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pumping gas. OK, according to <a title=\"Don't use your cell phone while at the pump.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/autos\/hazards\/gasvapor.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Snopes.com<\/a>, this is an urban legend. No proof has ever been provided showing that a cellphone can ignite a fire at a gas station. Nonetheless, cellphone manufacturers Erickson and Nokia recommend turning off your cellphones while at the pump.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Flying in an airplane. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration believes that cellphones and other portable electronic devices may give off radio signals that can affect aircraft communications, navigation and flight control. Cellphone use on airplanes have been banned in the US since 1991.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Waiting\u00a0alone by a street, driveway, busy intersection, or deserted area for a ride. You won&#8217;t be aware of who is coming to pick you up to take you away.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Driving.\u00a0 It&#8217;s commonly believed that drivers are safer if using a speakerphone with their cellphone in the car.\u00a0 However, there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that holding a cellphone or using a speakerphone are equally dangerous.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Driving.\u00a0 If\u00a0you receive a call you need to take, pull over in a safe, well-lit area. Ensure your doors are locked and make your conversation brief.\u00a0 Tell the person you will call back when you arrive to your destination.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Driving with someone else on the phone.\u00a0 If the person driving you is talking on the phone or texting,\u00a0offer to put their phone on speaker phone or text for them to increase the safety for both of you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While doing anything that requires your full attention &#8211; like riding a bike, playing a sport, watching children &#8211; especially children in a pool!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> <\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A Mom&#8217;s Perspective<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Your teen&#8217;s exploration of how to enter his\/her friends&#8217; phone numbers in his\/her new cellphone or learning the latest texting lingo should be the least of your teen&#8217;s concerns. S\/he will need help in seeing the big picture and realizing where\u00a0safety and common sense come into play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As Dr. Sophy stated in my interview with him\u00a0in <a title=\"See this post to watch my interview with Dr. Charles Sophy about teens' cellphone use\" href=\"https:\/\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/18\/teens-cellphones-a-primer-part-i\/\" target=\"_blank\">Teens &amp; Cellphones:\u00a0 A Primer Part I<\/a>, it&#8217;s up to you, the parent, to instill &#8220;etiquette, appropriateness, and safety&#8221; with your child as s\/he begins using a cellphone for the first time.
