{"id":13740,"date":"2014-08-15T06:22:40","date_gmt":"2014-08-14T23:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/?p=13740"},"modified":"2014-08-15T06:22:40","modified_gmt":"2014-08-14T23:22:40","slug":"child-have-trouble-taking-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/child-have-trouble-taking-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Your Child Have Trouble Taking Notes?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13853\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2014\/08\/Trouble-Taking-Notes-Main.jpg?resize=567%2C315&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Trouble Taking Notes Main\" width=\"567\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2014\/08\/Trouble-Taking-Notes-Main.jpg?w=567&amp;ssl=1 567w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2014\/08\/Trouble-Taking-Notes-Main.jpg?resize=300%2C166&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Have you noticed any of the following happening with your student?<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>S\/he is having\u00a0trouble keeping up in class<\/li>\n<li>School is\u00a0over whelming because s\/he\u00a0is\u00a0having trouble focusing on the what the teacher is saying<\/li>\n<li>S\/he has trouble taking notes and doesn&#8217;t seem to take very good notes&#8230;or any notes&#8230; in class<\/li>\n<li>S\/he can&#8217;t remember what the teacher said was for homework?<\/li>\n<li>Does your child have or possibly have ADHD, Dysgraphia, Memory Retrieval Issues or other\u00a0learning disabilities?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>If you have answered yes to any of these question&#8217;s than you are experiencing something similar to what I&#8217;ve noticed with my first son, Hunter.\u00a0 \u00a0Hunter has always been a very bright, smart, sweet loving child. \u00a0As the first of three children, I have always been\u00a0very over protective of him, as all mothers are.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>It is hard to understand but when something is happening with your child the mother instincts go into overdrive and no matter what anyone says, including:<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;you&#8217;re crazy he is fine&#8221; \u00a0 or <\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;he will grow out of it&#8221; <\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This just doesn&#8217;t sit well with me. \u00a0At a young age I knew in my heart that Hunter had hearing problems\u00a0and\u00a0he was very hyper. \u00a0Hunter was diagnosed \u00a0ADHD and started medication. \u00a0All through school from kindergarten to 5th grade homework and classwork have been a all-out-war to small battles in many different ways, despite being on medication and receiving extra help at school.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>From long nights trying to get his homework done, to \u00a0him saying, &#8220;I can&#8217;t remember,&#8221; to &#8220;I forgot my homework,&#8221; Hunter was having trouble taking notes and having great difficulty at school. \u00a0He often forgot\u00a0what he \u00a0was supposed to finish and \u00a0studying for tests was another issue because he wasn&#8217;t taking complete notes due to the fact he was overwhelmed and just couldn&#8217;t focus on more than one task at a time.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Each year we did make steps in the right direction but in my heart I knew we were missing something and again I was faced with:<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em> &#8220;Hunter is fine he just doesn&#8217;t like to write&#8221; \u00a0 or <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>&#8220;Hunter is just being lazy&#8221; <\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>But I knew in my heart there was more to this story, so\u00a0I didn&#8217;t give up. \u00a0The school we were at stated that Hunter had met almost all of his goals and he was no longer eligible to be on an\u00a0Individualized Education Program\u00a0(IEP). I fought this, I knew there\u00a0is something else that we are missing, and pleaded with them to help us,\u00a0but we were denied.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So I decided to transfer Hunter to a new school within the same district hoping things would be better and I could get him the help he needed. Hunter began 6th grade and the writing demands, note-taking, and essays were\u00a0just to much for him to keep up. I kept researching,\u00a0\u00a0knowing I would again have to find what was wrong on my own, until one day I discovered\u00a0it&#8230; Hunter has <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dysgraphia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dysgraphia<\/a>. &#8220;Wow,&#8221; was all I could say through the tears in my eyes &#8221; I found it!&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>My heart knew this was the one of the missing pieces to Hunter&#8217;s puzzle. So my new journey began requesting new testing which has led us to finding out Hunter that has long-term memory retrieval and processing issues on top of what we already know. Time to start looking for Assistive Technology to help my son since I wasn&#8217;t getting the support and backing from the school and district.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;In the meantime I became his personal scribe and his world of written expression started to bloom little by little.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>One night, my searching led me to the <a href=\"http:\/\/store.livescribe.com\/by-series\/echo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">livescribe Echo Smartpen<\/a>!
