Were there suicide warning signs?<\/p>\n<p>According to a report released last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), death by suicide has increased by nearly 25% in the last two decades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suicide<\/strong> is the<strong> 10th leading cause of death<\/strong> for all ages.&nbsp; There are nearly <strong>123 suicides every day<\/strong>, with the <strong>highest rate among middle-aged white males<\/strong>. (source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suicidology.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American Association of Suicidology<\/a>),<\/p>\n<p>Suicide is now the<strong> 2nd leading cause of death for people ages&nbsp;15 to 25<\/strong> in America.<\/p>\n<p>What is causing this rise?&nbsp; Some say its due to the alarming rise of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mentalhealthamerica.net\/issues\/state-mental-health-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mental illness<\/a>, which now represents 1 in 5 Americans or 40 million people.&nbsp; The rate is the same for our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/NAMI\/media\/NAMI-Media\/Infographics\/Children-MH-Facts-NAMI.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">youth<\/a>, ages 13-18.<\/p>\n<p>Others feel social isolation is to blame.&nbsp; In the <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/000312240607100301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">General Social Survey (GSS)<\/a>, the authors asked respondents how many confidants they felt they could entrust with important matters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1985, the number of confidants was 2.94.&nbsp;When the survey was repeated again in 2004, the number of confidants decreased to 2.08.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even more interesting was that the<strong> number of people who said they had no one with whom they could discuss important matters tripled.<\/strong>&nbsp; &nbsp;I have to imagine today this number is even greater.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>LGQBT Suicidal Stats<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Suicide is high amongst kids who feel they may be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer.&nbsp; &nbsp;According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/youth-report\/view-and-share-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Human Rights Campaign<\/a>,&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;26% of LGBT youth say their biggest problems are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>not feeling accepted by their family<\/li>\n<li>trouble at school\/bullying<\/li>\n<li>a fear to be out\/open<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not feeling comfortable about sharing their innermost feelings with others close to them leads to isolation, which can lead to shame and depression.&nbsp; Shame and depression can lead to anxiety and suicide.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; The LGBTQ suicidal statistics are staggering. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/save.org\/lgbtq-resources\/friends-family-lgbtq-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Save.org&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Lesbian, gay, and bisexual kids<\/strong> are<strong> three times more<\/strong> <strong>likely<\/strong> than straight kids to attempt suicide at some point in their lives.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>LGBTQ youth<\/strong> are <strong>4 times more likely<\/strong> to make a medically serious attempt at suicide than other young people.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Lesbian and bisexual women and girls<\/strong> are<strong> twice as likely<\/strong> to attempt suicide than those who are straight.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Gay and bisexual guys<\/strong> are <strong>four times as likely<\/strong> to attempt suicide than heterosexual men and boys.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Nearly half of young trans people<\/strong> have seriously considered taking their lives and<strong> a quarter <\/strong>have<strong>&nbsp;attempted suicide<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Suicide warning signs are hard to assess if you are unaware your child is LGBTQ.&nbsp; According to <a href=\"https:\/\/save.org\/about-suicide\/warning-signs-risk-factors-protective-factors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Save.org<\/a>, an organization dedicated to the prevention of suicide, you need to be concerned when someone is talking about&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Suicide or wanting to die (75% of people who try suicide tell someone first)<\/li>\n<li>Feeling hopeless or having no purpose<\/li>\n<li>Being in unbearable pain<\/li>\n<li>Feeling trapped<\/li>\n<li>Being a burden to others<\/li>\n<li>Feeling more anxious, agitated, or reckless<\/li>\n<li>Feeling isolated or alone<\/li>\n<li>Have trouble sleeping<\/li>\n<li>A lot of built-up anger or wanting revenge<\/li>\n<li>The fear that the person is going to kill her\/himself (TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY)<\/li>\n<li>Cutting or hurting oneself<\/li>\n<li>Wanting to give something away that was once coveted<\/li>\n<li>Not caring about personal hygiene anymore<\/li>\n<li>Purchasing a weapon<\/li>\n<li>An obsession with death or someone&nbsp;who died by suicide<\/li>\n<li>Hoarding medicines<\/li>\n<li>Covering up substance abuse or increased substance abuse<\/li>\n<li>Their desire to say goodbye<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Print these suicide warning signs out and keep them handy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Suicide Prevention Resources<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you see suicide warning signs and suspect your child, spouse, or someone else is contemplating suicide,&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Ask them&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Are you having thoughts of suicide?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Are you having thoughts about harming yourself?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You may surprise them and begin a conversation that may have never occurred.&nbsp; The best way to communicate with them is with straightforwardness, honesty, and gentleness.<\/p>\n<p>Tell them that you are concerned about them.&nbsp; Suicidal thoughts can be curable, suicide cannot.&nbsp;
