As mothers, we enjoy telling our kids that we have eyes in the back of our head…we see everything! \u00a0There are many times\u00a0I wish this was true. \u00a0Our neighborhood had been burglarized quite a bit in the last two years and it always makes me a little uneasy when I run errands…or even worse…go on vacation. \u00a0If only there was a better way to keep an eye on the house without actually being there.<\/p>\n

When my children were young, I enjoyed the luxury of having a baby monitor. \u00a0I could keep tabs on the baby and hear every murmur. \u00a0This is the kind of access I’d like to have with the house, only better and with mobility. Fortunately, home surveillance is not just for businesses or part of an elaborate, expensive alarm package anymore. \u00a0Home surveillance has gone DIY! \u00a0As a tech enthusiast, DIY tech is right up my alley. \u00a0So when I was given the chance to test out\u00a0Logitech’s Alert system<\/a>*, I jumped on it!<\/p>\n

I listed our dining room set on Craigslist.com<\/a>, hoping to find an easy way to sell it without much hassle. \u00a0After 1 1\/2 weeks, I received an e-mail from a woman, Sue, who couldn’t wait to see it. \u00a0 \u00a0She had saved up for a dining room set for\u00a0over 10 years and couldn’t wait to buy one. \u00a0 Two days later, Sue would come to our house to see the set. \u00a0As the day drew closer, it dawned on me, what if Sue isn’t who she said she was? \u00a0What it it is really a man who just wants access into our home?<\/p>\n

Fortunately, the Logitech system arrived the day before Sue arrived. \u00a0I set up the Logitech Alert system with the outdoor camera (750e) pointed at the front door and the Logitech Alert 700i Add-On Camera in the dining room. \u00a0I loaded the\u00a0 software on my computer and tested the cameras. \u00a0Wow, it actually worked! \u00a0Woohoo!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Knowing that the footage from the cameras are available on the Internet, securely protected by my password, I sent a link to my husband at his office and asked him to “keep an eye” on things during my meeting with Sue. \u00a0In fact, the cameras even have microphones, so he could hear the conversation as well. \u00a0I thought, cool, he could probably call me \u00a0should he have suggestions for any negotiations on price.<\/p>\n

Is Sue Who She Said She Was?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Now, let me just say, these cameras are not spy cameras. \u00a0They have red light that shines on the front to let you know they are on. \u00a0It is also obvious that both the indoor and outdoor Logitech Alert cameras are cameras.<\/p>\n

So, back to my story. \u00a0Sue arrived with her husband. \u00a0Yikes, I was already outnumbered. \u00a0She seemed genuine so I figured I was OK. \u00a0Besides, I knew my husband was watching everything on video. \u00a0I felt very secure knowing that he was with me…in spirit. \u00a0The good news was that Sue and her husband were very polite and genuine and truly a pleasure to meet. \u00a0The bad news was they decided not to buy my set. \u00a0 Oh well. \u00a0I’ll try again.<\/p>\n

My husband could see almost everything that was going on, as the inside camera has a pretty good wide-angle lens. \u00a0His one suggestion was that I not step in front of the camera and linger so long next time. \u00a0Darn, my bum amplified over video, not a pretty sight! \u00a0I guess I became so comfortable with the camera that even I forgot about it! \u00a0LOL! \u00a0Note to self, next time, move the camera to a better spot!<\/p>\n

Keeping an Eye on Things<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I have enjoyed feeling more secure by using the cameras for Surveillance\u00a0around the house. \u00a0My indoor camera points towards our back sliding glass door and windows. \u00a0I recently wrote an article called Five Tips to Stop Home Burglaries<\/a>, and in my research I discovered that 22% of burglars enter through the back door. \u00a0The other camera is pointed towards my front door, because, believe it or not, 34% of burglars enter through the front door! \u00a0Wow, that’s a higher percentage that I thought.<\/p>\n

Vacation<\/span><\/p>\n

I loved using these cameras during our trip to Disney World. \u00a0First, I could keep an eye on the house and be alerted by text if \u00a0there was any \u00a0movement. \u00a0Second, we\u00a0happened\u00a0to be having an Open House while we were on our vacation. \u00a0I watched the “action” from Florida as we got on and off rides. \u00a0I was very disappointed to see how little foot traffic we had. \u00a0Seeing it really hit home rather than just hearing about it from our\u00a0Realtor.<\/p>\n

Business Travel<\/span><\/p>\n

Recently, I traveled to Northern California to visit PlayStation. \u00a0I LOVED being able to see the kids in the morning as they prepared and ate their breakfast and knowing when the family got home at night so I could give them a call on Skype. \u00a0This was SO handy. \u00a0Again, I was notified by e-mail when movement was detected, so I could load access the free Logitech app to see what was going on.<\/p>\n

Now, I must note that you do need to pay a monthly subscription to to access your live video content through the\u00a0smartphone app. \u00a0For $79.99 you can purchase a one year subscription to the Logitech Alert Web and Mobile\u00a0Commander. \u00a0I’m telling you, this is worth purchasing, especially if you travel a lot.<\/p>\n

Home Office<\/span><\/p>\n

I can view any of the cameras from my Logitech Alert Commander on my home PC. \u00a0Yes, I am\u00a0occasionally\u00a0watching my kiddos when they are playing in the family room and I am working in my home office. \u00a0I find it especially helpful with play dates. \u00a0My son was shocked one day when I came blazing into the room telling him and his friend no jumping on the sofas! \u00a0See, moms really do have eyes in the back of their heads! \u00a0LOL!<\/p>\n

You can purchase either Master System for indoors or out. \u00a0The Master System includes one camera and the component you need to plug into your router. \u00a0You can then include Add-On Cameras for the inside, outside, or both. \u00a0Logitech Alert encourages Alert users to upload their video footage to their website to see what they captured with their cameras. A Mom’s Perspective<\/span><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a>I have never had an alarm or video security system before, this was my first experience. \u00a0It has given me such comfort knowing more about what is going on in and around our house. \u00a0I feel so much more in control and less worried about break-ins.<\/p>\n

Years ago, you would need to hire someone to put in a video surveillance system. \u00a0Not so anymore. \u00a0The quality is great and the ability to view on a phone, tablet, or PC gives great flexibility. \u00a0I should note that these cameras are not wireless. \u00a0They still need to be plugged in. \u00a0However, the Alert system uses HomePlug 4.4 firmware which means the cameras can network to the router through the house’s electricity circuits.<\/p>\n

If you’re interested in trying out home surveillance, the Logitech Alert system is a great way to go. \u00a0If you’re expecting and planning on getting a baby monitor, I would recommend getting a Logitech Alert. \u00a0It’s much better quality than most baby monitors and you can add onto it and build a home surveillance system that will give you more peace of mind for your growing family.<\/p>\n
