Video Games!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\">by Lori Cunningham (@wellconnectdmom)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Christmas is just around the corner. \u00a0Where did 2012 go? \u00a0Fall and Winter are the time of year most video game manufacturers release their biggest hitters. \u00a0We recommended some of the best games in our post, <a href=\"https:\/\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/24\/the-best-upcoming-family-games-from-e3-2012\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Best Upcoming Games for 2012 from E3<\/a>. \u00a0Your child\/teen will find out about the latest games and most likely will be asking for them on their holiday lists. \u00a0But how do you know if the game your kid is asking for is appropriate for them?<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-8378\" title=\"ESRB_ratings logos\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2012\/10\/ESRB_ratings-logos.jpg?resize=531%2C119&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"531\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2012\/10\/ESRB_ratings-logos.jpg?w=759&amp;ssl=1 759w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2012\/10\/ESRB_ratings-logos.jpg?resize=300%2C67&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 531px) 100vw, 531px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, just like there are ratings for Movies, there are also ratings for Video Games. \u00a0ESRB, a non-profit organization that evaluates video games ans assigns an official age and content rating for both games and apps. \u00a0Before purchasing a game for your child, check their rating on the front of every video game to ensure it&#8217;s appropriate for your kids.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Video Game Ratings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a chart from the ESRB website which explains the ratings:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8379\" title=\"ESRB Graphic Explaining Ratings\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wellconnectedmom.com\/blog\/p-content\/themes\/atahualpa342\/images\/articles\/2012\/10\/ESRB-Graphic-Explaining-Ratings.jpg?resize=421%2C706&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"706\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When you look at the game box, you will see this rating clearly on the front in black and white. \u00a0To get a little better idea of why the game is rated as it is, flip the box over and look for the same rating. \u00a0By the rating you will now see a brief description such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mild Lyrics<\/li>\n<li>Comic Mischief<\/li>\n<li>Mild Cartoon Violence<\/li>\n<li>Lyrics<\/li>\n<li>Mild Suggestive Themes<\/li>\n<li>Mild Blood<\/li>\n<li>Mild Violence<\/li>\n<li>etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Though the ratings are helpful, some parents might desire more information about why a particular game was rated that way. \u00a0You can go online to check the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esrb.org\/ratings\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">game&#8217;s summary <\/a>or event better, ESRB has created an app so when you&#8217;re at the store, you can look up the game to evaluate it more carefully.<\/div>\n<p>We are about to review the video game, Zumba Fitness for the PlayStation 3 to post soon. \u00a0I looked up the game&#8217;s summary and rating and found that of all the Zumba games, the Zumba fitness is the only game rated E. \u00a0The other Zumba games are rated E 10, which means it is appropriate for kids 10 and older. \u00a0Here are the summaries that popped up for all of the Zumba games after I typed &#8220;zumba&#8221; There&#8217;s An App for That<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The ratings on the package are great for getting a quick idea of what a game is about but say you&#8217;re at the store and you see the rating but wish you had a way of finding more information about how the rating was derived before you buy the game? \u00a0ESRB knows that many decisions are made at the point of purchase and they want to arm parents with knowledge so parents can make informed decisions.<\/p>\n<p>The free ESRB app is available for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.pointabout.esrb&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Android<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/esrb-rating-search-app\/id339004925?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\">iPhone<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.windowsphone.com\/en-us\/store\/search?q=esrb\" target=\"_blank\">Windows<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>To download the ESRB app on your phone, go to your phone&#8217;s app store or marketplace and search for &#8220;ESRB.&#8221; \u00a0It also mentions how commentators are exchanging humorous remarks like &#8220;I&#8217;ve got the spunk, the funk, and the junk in da trunk,&#8221; and &#8220;I plan on leaving the Big Balls all black and blue.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A Mom&#8217;s Perspective<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are hundreds of thousands of video games and apps out there, with new ones being introduced throughout the year. \u00a0It is impossible to keep abreast of which games are appropriate for your child&#8217;s age and which are not. \u00a0In the old days, we moms would ask our friends their thoughts about a particular game, hoping their kids had the game. \u00a0But today, you often need to make a quicker decision. \u00a0Even asking your friends what they think about their kids&#8217;
