You may recall from my <\/span>CES 2010:\u00a0 Great Technology Products\u00a0 for Moms<\/span><\/a> article in January, that the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>, was my #1 favorite product from CES (Consumer Electronics Show).\u00a0 The Zomm was created by a mom, Laurie Penix, whose three children were constantly losing their cellphones. \u00a0\u00a0ZOMM<\/a>\u00a0stands for\u00a0Zac, Olivia and Madison’s Mom.\u00a0 The ZOMM<\/a>\u00a0is a keychain you attach to your keys that connects wirelessly, through Bluetooth, to your cell phone.\u00a0 Should you leave your house, a taxi cab, a restaurant, the gym, etc. without your phone, the ZOMM<\/a>, will set off an alarm to alert you that you are leaving your phone behind.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I had the opportunity to talk with Laurie at CES\u00a0 as a member of\u00a0 the press.\u00a0 To see Laurie’s personal explanation of the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(courtesy of my expert video filming skills) take a look:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

When the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0was ready for production, they sent me a sample unit.\u00a0 The ZOMM<\/a>\u00a0 came to my doorstep a month ago and I still remember my anticipation for it’s arrival.\u00a0 The packaging is very impressive.\u00a0 The <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0sits enclosed in a hard plastic protected case.\u00a0 Believe it or not, the ZOMM<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0actually sits up on a pedestal within the case.\u00a0 Wow, it was like I was holding royalty.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 I took it out of it’s case and plugged it in using the enclosed mini-USB cable supplied.\u00a0 After charging it two hours, I was ready to put the ZOMM<\/a>\u00a0to the test.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

Why I’m a Part of the Loser Club<\/span><\/h2>\n

Now, you may be asking yourself, “why is she so obsessed with this <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0thing.”\u00a0 Let me tell you.\u00a0 I have “laid to rest” two of my cellphones in the past.\u00a0 I literally laid them down somewhere and never found them again.\u00a0 One time we were on vacation in Florida – I lost it somewhere between the car and the fast food restaurant we ate at.\u00a0 The other lost\u00a0phone I’ve already forgotten the details – I just remember losing it.\u00a0 Both times I remember calling my cellphone regularly hoping whoever found it would answer it.\u00a0 But my phone bill soon proved to me that my phone had found a new owner.\u00a0 Bummer, another phone lost.\u00a0 But you know?\u00a0 I’m not alone.\u00a0 When I wrote my review of the <\/span>Motorola Cliq<\/span><\/a>, I called Disneyland to find out how many phones they find a day at the park.\u00a0 During their busiest times, they said they recover 30-50 phones a day!\u00a0\u00a0So if you’re a cell phone loser too, don’t despair,\u00a0the Loser Club is pretty big and growing everyday!<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Setting Up the ZOMM\u00a0 <\/span><\/h2>\n

So you see, the idea of having a “wireless” leash on my phone is just what I needed.\u00a0 To set up the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>, you need to go to settings on your cell phone\u00a0and enable Bluetooth.\u00a0 \u00a0Next, turn on\u00a0the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and set up a Bluetooth relationship between your cellphone and the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 After the devices have been paired, put the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on your keychain and you’re ready to go.\u00a0 It’s very easy to set up.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

How the ZOMM Works\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

The <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0sets off an alarm after you get within a certain distance away from your phone:\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

20 feet<\/strong> –\u00a0The <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0alarm will ring when you get beyond 20 feet away from your phone<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0So if you leave your keys (with your <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0keychain) by your purse and take your phone to another area of your house,\u00a0the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0won’t ring until you get more than 20 feet away.\u00a0\u00a0 So you don’t always need to have your keys right next to your <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

up to 30 feet<\/strong> – if you and your keys go beyond 20 feet away from your phone, the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0will vibrate, flash it’s lights, and a fast beeping alarm will alert you.\u00a0 This happened to me often as I left my phone in the car and walked my little girl to her classroom.\u00a0 To turn off the alarm, I just pressed the Z\u00a0 button on the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0once.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

more than 30 feet<\/strong>– once you move beyond 30 feet a very noticeable fast paced alarm comes on to alert you.\u00a0 Again, you can press the Z button on the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to turn off the alarm and run and get your phone if you forgot\u00a0it!<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

You can tell a mom came up with the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0because it is a multi-tasker.\u00a0 Not only does it act as a wireless leash to keep your phone in check but it also offers these features:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

  1. Speakerphone<\/strong> – the speakerphone feature is great in helping you to answer calls if your keys are easier to find in your purse than your phone<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Panic button<\/strong> – pressing the Z button a long time\u00a0acts as a panic alarm – with a\u00a0loud siren.\u00a0 If you’re in a crowded area, people will notice you<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Calls Emergency<\/strong>– press the Z button long enough to hear the panic alarm then hold it even longer until the panic alarm stops, then let go.\u00a0 This will call your local emergency services and play a pre-recorded emergency message asking them to send assistance to your mobile phone’s GPS location if you do not speak soon.\u00a0 Pretty amazing, huh?\u00a0And, there is no extra cost for this potentially life saving feature.\u00a0 Companies for other devices (like GPS devices that locate children or the elderly) charge a monthly fee.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    So you’re probably wondering, it’s been a month, did I lose my phone or at least have the “Out of Range” alarm come on?\u00a0 The answer is no – except for when I was testing the range of the <\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Since I’m using HTC’s new Tilt2 phone for the next three months for AT&T and blogging about my experiences on their<\/span> LosetheLaptop.com<\/span> site, I wanted to ensure that I didn’t lose the phone.\u00a0 The\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>ZOMM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0has helped keep the phone safe –although I did misplace my keys at Knott’s Berry Farm!\u00a0 To read about that adventure, see my <\/span>Losethelaptop<\/span>\u00a0post.\u00a0 Ughh!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
