Monthly Amazon Add-On’s to Consider

When I first got the Kindle HDX I have to admit that I was a little overwhelmed at the choices of add-on’s to complete my Kindle experience.  I had heard about Amazon Prime, but what was FreeTime and FreeTime Unlimited?  And what is Kindle Unlimited?  Unfortunately, there is no good way to navigate what all these mean on Amazon’s website.  Nor is there one program with a discounted price to take advantage of all of these great add-on’s.  Nonetheless, I have summarized them for you so you have a better understanding of these add-on options to make an educated guess on which ones would be valuable for your family.

1.  FreeTime App

FreeTime App

The FreeTime App is actually free.  It gives you, the parent, control over your child’s experience on the tablet.  You can set up a profile for each of your children then you add content – any books, apps, or videos you own can be included.  When you hand the tablet to your child, click on their profile and they will only see the content you added for them.
But here’s the best part of the deal…you can set parental controls so finitely, so that your child must read for one hour before being allowed to watch a video or use an app.  You can set the schedule for the week and another one for weekdays, where you might be more lax.  My daughter LOVES to read, but I was always nervous about giving her a tablet to read at night, she might be tempted to switch over to an app instead.  By setting the required reading time to 1 hour as well as disallowing access at 9:30 pm, her bedtime, I no longer worry.
Here’s a good article I found which gives you the details on setting up the FreeTime app for your family.

2.  FreeTime Unlimited

FreeTime Unlimited

FreeTime Unlimited is a service you pay for monthly that, based upon your child’s age, will allow access to thousands of educational apps, books, games, movies, and TV shows appropriate for kids ages 3-8.  Content within FreeTime Unlimited includes PBS Kids, Disney, Sesame Street, Sponge Bob, Little Critter, Arthur, Batman, Reading Rainbow, Go Diego Go, Bob the Builder, Dinosaur Train, and more.  Amazon assures that there are no ads or in-app purchases displayed.  It’s a safe environment that gives children lots of room to explore.
Best of all, your FreeTime Unlimited content all shows up within your FreeTime app, giving you complete control over the amount of time your child spends in the areas of books, videos, and games.  And, if you have the room on your Kindle Fire HDX, you can download content for offline travels.  Kindle FreeTime is a great way to keep your child entertained on long road trips or while waiting at the doctor’s office.
FreeTime Unlimited is $4.99 for one child, $9.99 for 2-4 children or, if you are a Amazon Prime (explained below) subscriber, the cost is discounted at $2.99 for one child and $6.99 for 2-4 children.

3.  Kindle Unlimited

Kindle Unlimited Books
Kindle Unlimited was just introduced a few months ago.  It’s like having your own private library of 700,000 books, accessible from your tablet.  There is no limit on how many books you check-out during the month, though you can only have up to 10 checked out at one time.  You can read books, your daughter can read books, your husband, etc.  When you see a book you like you download it onto your tablet to read.  When you’re done, you can return it with a few clicks.
Here are some of the books my 11 year old daughter has loved to read:
Popular tween titles include:
  • The complete Harry Potter series
  • many of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books
  • The Diary of a 6th Grade Ninja…all 8 books
  • Secret Agent 6th Grader series
  • 6th Grade Spy
  • Lord of the Rings/Hobbit/etc.
Popular adult titles include
  • The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
  • The Life of Pi
  • The Five Love Languages
  • The Hunger Games – all in the series
  • Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt
  • The Paper Magician
  • Tons of cookbooks from crock pots to gluten-free to Mason Jar meals!

I love that I can look up gluten-free cookbooks or health books on a pure whim now.  I can also easily browse through every book my daughter wants to or is reading too…from another room…or at another location.  My daughter loves taking Accelerated Reader tests and tries to increase weekly.  I no longer need to take her to the library all the time and worry about late fees…which seemed to be inevitable.

You can get Kindle Unlimited for $9.99/mo. and it’s automatically billed for you.  You can cancel anytime, but all “checked out” books will be immediately returned.

4.  Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime main

Amazon’s Prime membership gives you a number of benefits including:

  • free two-day shipping on over 20 million items
  • 41,000 movies & TV shows to watch
  • ability to download and read one of 500,000 Kindle books a month – no due date
  • over a million songs to stream, with the ability to customize your playlists
Prime members receive commercial-free streaming of popular shows Downtime Abbey, Justified, Under the Dome, Sponge Bob, Dora the Explorer and great movies such as The Hunger Games, Marvel’s The Avengers, and more.  And now, over half of the Amazon Prime TV & Movie collection is available for download so you can watch shows anywhere without a wireless connection…in the car, at the doctor’s office, or on a plane.
Currently, Amazon Prime subscribers can still access all the Amazon TV shows/movies, books and iOS apps on their iOS devices, but they will not be able to download movies or TV shows for access offline.

5.  Mayday

kindle-mayday

Mayday is another free program that isn’t an add-on, but I wanted to highlight it because it’s a fantastic feature that comes with all Kindle HD tablets.  Mayday is a button you can press to be connected instantly to an Amazon expert.  Once you press the button, the expert can help walk you through the steps on your tablet to help you with your question.  You will actually be able to see the Amazon Tech advisor on your screen, but they will be unable to see you, but they will be able to point to things on your screen to help speed the process along.

The Kindle HDX 8″ 16 GB sells for $379 through Amazon.  Other Kindle Fire HDX tablets are available in 32 GB, 64 GB, and 4G LTE versions.

Family Technology at it's Best

A Mom’s Perspective

The Kindle Fire HDX tablet is the lightest tablet I have and also the one with the most vibrant colors, due to its richly intense graphics.  It’s also fast with its 4-core processor, making multi-tasking easy too.  It’s just a great tablet overall for any or all of your family members.

But what makes the Kindle Fire HDX even more remarkable is the free FreeTime app and possible add-on programs you can purchase.  We have not seen another program that allows you to set limits on videos, apps, and even reading before.  And the fact that you can require so much reading first before any other activities can be used…per child is fantastic.

In order for your child to get out of their profile, you need to put in your password first, so the tablet becomes locked down until your child completes his/her needed reading.  What a great resource for parents to teach their children self-control and perseverance.

If you have readers in your family or want to encourage more reading with your kids, the Kindle Unlimited program is a must-have.  Although it may not have all the books you’d like, it still have a plethora of choices and both my 11-year-old and 8-year-old have enjoyed reading a whole myriad of books.  My son has enjoyed exploring his interests about dinosaurs, jokes, cooking, and AR books like The Boxcar Children.

You can feel comfortable purchasing a Kindle Fire HDX, it will be a great fit for your entire family.  Feel free to ask us any questions below in comments, we’d be happy to answer them for you.

*  I was given a Kindle Fire 8.9 HDX in exchange for my honest opinion.  All opinions are my own.
