Lenovo IdeaPad S940

The Lenovo IdeaPad S940 laptop offers incredible depth and colors with its 14-inch 4K display. At only 2.6 lbs, this is a laptop you’ll take everywhere.

I’ve been a Lenovo Yoga fan for years.  I started with the YOGA tablets and then moved into the YOGA 2 Pro, a thin, bright orange laptop I still use today.

I also tried the YOGA 900S and was amazed at how luxurious and thin it is.

Recently, I have been using the IdeaPad S940 laptop.  Although it’s heavier than the YOGA 900S, it’s not by much and it’s nearly as thin as the YOGA 900S.

Like the 900S, it has a beautiful and luxurious feel to it, cast in premium aluminum metal.

IdeaPad S940 4K Laptop

The IdeaPad S940 is a workhorse, perfect for the office and home.  It has a 14″ curved contour display, giving it a similar rounded experience found on many premium smartphones.

I remember looking at this laptop while at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) earlier in the year.  I was utterly amazed at the depth and colors of the images on its screen.  The HDR 4K resolution is breathtaking.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S940 is great for movies and binging on your favorite TV shows.

After receiving the Lenovo IdeaPad S940, I couldn’t wait to watch a movie on it.  While traveling from California to San Antonio, I pulled out the S940, my Mixcedr E7 Noise Canceling Bluetooth headphones, and opened the American Airlines URL to watch free movies.

I selected What Men Want, a funny movie about Ali, the main character, who is trying to get ahead in a man’s world.  After drinking a funny concoction given to her by a physic, she begins to hear what men are really thinking.

It was a funny movie, one I found it quite entertaining.  The color and clarity on the IdeaPad S940 were amazing, just like I had hoped.

The laptop also has two Dolby speakers on the sides of the keyboard, which sound great…when not attached to headphones!

A Good Size

With its nearly 14-inch size, the HDR display of the IdeaPad S940 has several advantages.  First, it fits easily into a bag or backpack, it’s a great size.

Second, I found it works really well in the cramped space of your airline seat.  There’s still room for your beverage on the tray table!

With its beautiful high defition screen, movies and videos are vivid and clear.  The picture is captivating no matter the screen size.

Lastly, a smaller screen means a lighter laptop, weighing in at just 2.6 lbs.

The Lenovo Advantage

Besides making a high-quality laptop with premium features, every Lenovo computer comes with software built-in called Lenovo Vantage.

Lenovo Vantage is an app you can load which shows your 1 year warranty (and how many days you have left) as well as your device make, serial number, product number, and BIOS number.  All handy information if you need to call Lenovo support.

In addition, Lenovo Vantage is where you go to fine-tune your settings, check for system updates, scan your hardware, and ensure your computer and online activites are protected.

Here’s Looking at You

The one thing I dislike about Windows computers is how you HAVE to add a password or PIN to your screen before you can wake it up.

I often forget the PIN, so it makes it more aggravating.  The Lenovo IdeaPad S940, using Windows software, fixes this issue with its built-in face tracker.

Windows scans your face and the next time you wake up your laptop, it uses the front-facing camera to identify you.  No need to type anything.  Slick!

I also like that Lenovo allows you to turn the camera to Privacy Mode or change the background behind you when on a conference call.

You can change it to Blur, Comic, or Sketch mode, which plays with the background behind you, obscuring it from the view of your audience.

Although I don’t have a connected monitor to the IdeaPad S940, Lenovo’s AI capability along with its eye-tracking Glance software, allows you to shift content from your laptop display to your connected monitors…all with just the flick of your eyes!  Cool stuff!

And speaking of eyes, the laptop will automatically save your content and darken your screen when you step away, protecting your privacy from prying eyes.

A Mom’s Perspective

I’ll say it again, the 4K HDR display blew me away with its depth, richness of color, and clarity.  I used to watch movies on my iPad, but the IdeaPad S940 is far superior and as a laptop, it stands up by itself.

To confirm what I was seeing was truly amazing, I played a 4K video on my Yoga Pro 2 (2016) to hone in on the difference of the picture.

It was noticeable in the brightness and clarity of the images.  When the image on the screens was darker, I could see with more clarity and brightness on the IdeaPad S940.

Pictures and videos are truly life-like.  And having the Dolby Atmos speakers on both sides of the laptop emerse you in the experience.

I noticed that the beveled screen gives you more screen with less landscape needed.  In fact, the IdeaPad 940 has nearly the same screen size as my Yoga 2 Pro, but the hardware casing is significantly smaller.

The Lenovo 13″ display Yoga Pro 2 (2016) in size versus the Lenovo IdeaPad 14″ display S940

In fact, to be more exact, the IdeaPad as a 14″ screen and the Yoga Pro 2 has a 13″ screen and yet the entire footprint of the IdeaPad S940 is smaller.

If you appreciate a stellar screen display in a laptop while at the same time desiring an easy light on-the-go laptop, the IdeaPad S940 is a great choice.

Because of its price, I wouldn’t recommend it for your teenager.  As the old commercial for Toffifay used to say, “it’s too good for kids!”  I’d say the same for this laptop!
