MyPassport Makes it Easy To Take Your Media With You

The WD MyPassport allows you to take your large files on the go – whether to work, while traveling, or across the room. Great for back-ups, movies, music, & more.

You may not have thought about getting a portable external hard drive before, but let me tell you, they are extremely helpful.

Since we recommended the WD MyPassport in our Christmas Gadgets Gift Guide for Dads, we thought we’d go into more detail on how MyPassport can help the whole family.

Uses for MyPassport

Backing Up Your Family’s PC’s

How often do you back up your family’s data on their PC’s?  As your kids get older, you’ll find more PCs and laptops in your home.

To protect your family’s data from hard drive crashes, theft, or loss (leaving a Chromebook/laptop somewhere), you should back up data on a regular basis.

The beauty of the WD MyPassport is that you can plug it into each of these devices using its USB plug to copy data to the drive.

Easily set up a folder for each family member to keep their data straight on the hard drive.

Better yet, teach your kids to back up their own data using MyPassport.

MyPassport comes with WD Backup™ software preloaded to help you with backups.  It can even be set to run automatically to your own schedule.

Downloading Movies

I travel somewhat often and love to take movies on the go with me.  They are especially essential for long family road trips.

Home videos are great to take along on road trips.  Let your kids watch themselves as babies and young kids.  They’ll be entertained for hours!

I love that both Netflix and Disney Plus allow you to download movies.  Here’s the catch.

They are downloaded onto your device in a proprietary format.  You are not allowed to designate where they are downloaded, so you can’t use your MyPassport for this.

However, you can temporarily move stuff over from your PC or Chromebook to MyPassport to ensure you have space on your hard drive.

Music Storage on the Go

Have a lot of tunes?  Make a copy of them and put them on your MyPassport.  Then you can play your favorite songs anywhere.

You can move music back and forth from your phone to your MyPassport by using a PC to move songs.

Family Memories Backup

Keep a copy of all of your priceless photos and videos on MyPassport to ensure you have them in case anything happens to your PC or Mac.

Yes, you can keep a copy in the cloud, but it never hurts to have a physical copy at home with you.

Oh, as as an added bonus, its included WD Discovery™ software allows you to easily connect to Google Drive, Dropbox, facebook to back up your pictures and files.

Moving a Large File

There have been a number of times where someone else has needed to give me a large file, like a huge picture slideshow,  but couldn’t send it via email.

Saving it on a WD MyPassport is a snap and then you can plug it into any PC or laptop.

You can even plug it directly into the TV and change the source to point to your MyPassport USB input to watch the slideshow or listen to music.

Presentations

Giving a large presentation at work?  Save it to a MyPassport as slides or a PowerPoint Show and plug it directly into the TV at work.

Your slides will work like a charm.

Move Files Back & Forth from Work

Speaking of work, do you often have big documents that you work on at work and like to take them home to work on as well?

No need to bog down your laptop.  Just save the file to MyPassport to work on the drive and save all changes.  Easy.

MyPassport comes in a number of different colors and sizes, from 1TB to 5 TBs.  Prices have come down quite a bit from even a year ago.

The 1 TB MyPassport is on sale now for $59 and the 5TB is on sale for $109 directly from the WD website.  That’s a $40 savings on the 5TB drive.

Here’s the thing.  Consider going for the larger drive.  With the current $40 savings, you’re getting a great deal.

And best of all, you can do so much more with a 5 TB drive.

You could do all the things suggested above.  Just make a separate folder for Movies, Photos, Music, Backups, Work, etc. and you can store everything on one drive.

Or if you prefer some separation, MyPassport comes in different colors from black to blue to red.  Buy a different color for each purpose.  Black for back-up, Blue for movies, and Red for work.  Or for each PC in the house.

2020 is nearly here.  A little bit of organization can save you trouble and stress throughout the year.

While the WD MyPassports are on sale, take advantage now and buy one/some to give you more “space” in the New Year.
