On the Run with Virgin Mobile Overdrive Pro 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot

We have been an iPad family for about a year and a half. When we purchased the iPad, we did not get one that was 3G. In general, that decision has been a good one. Typically we use the iPad at home and work where we can tap into our existing wi-fi. However, there have been those occasional times that I really wish I had the internet available when I was out and about – vacations, when I need to use Square to accept credit cards for my business, etc. I began to research hotspots and what options would not break the bank.

When I was given the opportunity to test out the Virgin mobile Overdrive Pro 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot, I was excited to see what it had to offer. With the device you are able to get broadband on the run and can hook up to 5 wireless devices. What I really like about this device is that it offers 2 affordable, no-contract plans. You can choose to pay $5 per day of usage or $35 for a month of usage. $5 per day gets you up to 200 MB of 3G data as well as unlimited 4G WiMAX data. $35 a month gets you 2GB of 3G data as well as unlimited 4G WiMAX data. There is also a $55 a month plan with 5GB of data and unlimited 4G WiMAX data. To find out if you have WiMAX coverage in your area, check here.

Once I got past the initial set up process, using the Overdrive Pro was easy. (The instructions that come in the box for set-up are not great. I had a hard time figuring out what the password was to be able to start setting it up. Once I found online instructions telling me that your initial password is “password”, the rest of the set up was quite easy. ) Once your account is activated, you need to enter the password given on the Overdrive Pro into the settings of the device you will be using. After you have entered the password in, it will always recognize the device when it is turned on. Battery life is 4+ hours. I did find that when charging and using the device for an extended amount of time, it did get quite warm.

Speed and Coverage

Now, for the most important questions – speed and coverage.  I found that, in general, the speed was adequate for what I needed it for. My main usage was on my iPad. For things like checking email, using Facebook and surfing the web, the speed is just fine. I did find that when I was trying to load a page that had a lot of pictures on it (i.e. Pinterest, apps my kids were using that had video, etc.), that it had a hard time keeping up. Downloading videos was slow as well. (This is comparing it to the FiOS that I am used to.) I also noticed that if numerous devices were using it at the same time that it was a bit slower as well.

As far as coverage, before purchasing this product, you will want to double check that Virgin has good coverage in the areas that you plan to use the Overdrive Pro in. While I was reviewing this product, I had the opportunity to try it out in four different states. (We were travelling and I intentionally made sure I tried it out in as many places that I could.) I was able to connect most of the time. There were a few times that we were on the road that I lost reception for a time or it got very slow. There was also one time that I was hoping to use my Square for a function that I was at and was never able to get a connection. Once again, you will want to make sure that there is coverage in the areas that you will mostly be using the device.

Pros:

  1. No monthly contract.
  2. The ability to pick if you want to pay per day or per month. The per day option would be great for the person who does not need broadband access on the run all the time but just once in a while. The per month option is great for a longer vacation or for those that use broadband on the run more consistently.
  3. The cost. This is one of the most reasonable plans that I have seen – no matter which plan you choose!
  4. Very user friendly once you are set up. It is easy for others to sign on as long as you give them the password.

Cons:

  1. The speed. While it is adequate, I found that it was not as quick as the Verizon hotspot that my in-laws have.
  2. The fact that the device gets so warm worries me a little. Not sure if there would be the potential of overheating if used too long.
  3. Set-up is a little tricky.

A Mom’s Perspective

Overall, if you are looking for a hotspot for occasional, on the run use, with a good price tag, this is a great device. If you are in an area that has good 4G WiMAX coverage, it is an even better option. The Overdrive Pro can be purchased from Virgin Mobile’s website for $71.99 with free shipping. This beat the current price on Amazon.com.
